2023 PBR Louisiana State Games: Preview Story

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Baton Rouge, LA - On Saturday and Sunday, September 30, 2023 - October 1, 2023, the PBR Louisiana staff will travel to Louisiana State University, home of the defending NCAA DI National Champion LSU Tigers, to host our annual Louisiana State Games.  This invite-only event has become our marquee event of each calendar year, and this year's roster is arguably the most talented roster that we've ever had at a single event.

EVENT HISTORY

Last year's State Games was held at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, and the last time that we were at LSU was for our 2021 State Games.  Last year's State Games helped us identify prospects that had make significant jumps in their development, as well as new prospects, ahead of the 2023 high school baseball season.  Prospects such as 2023 C Steven Spalitta had a monster day at the plate, while showing athleticism for a physical backstop, which helped him earn an offer to Mississippi State University, where he is now a freshman for the Bulldogs.  Another position player that really made a splash at last year's State Games was 2025 OF Noah Lewis (Catholic BR HS) and he'll be at this coming weekend's event again as well.  The 6'2" 185 lbs. outfielder blazed a 6.59 60 at the event, while also recording a 90 mph max exit velocity.  Lewis's performance earned him an invite to the Future Games this past summer, where he improved upon his 60 yard dash time by recording an absurd 6.35 laser-timed 60.  He recently announced his commitment to the University of Louisiana.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THIS WEEKEND (COMMITTED 2024 PROSPECTS)

There's a total of 16 committed prospects who will be in attendance at this weekend's Louisiana State Games.  Let's take a look at a few that we are excited to see below.

+ 2024 LHP Grayden Harris (Central BR HS)

Durable 6'2" 195 lbs. frame.  Harris has been a household name and a Top 10 prospect in the state's 2024 class, ever since he stepped foot on campus as a freshman 3 years ago.  The Southern Miss recruit has a starter profile with a true 4-pitch mix.  Last spring, we saw Harris consistently sit in the mid-upper 80's with his fastball, but he showed an uptick in velocity over the summer, as he reached 91 mph with his heater at our PBR National Program Invitational Tournament.  Harris should draw the attention of MLB scouts this spring, being the top left-handed pitcher in the state's senior class, and what's even more intriguing with him, is the fact that he's yet to turn 17 years old, which means his upside is immense.

+ 2024 3B/RHP Trip Dobson (Catholic BR HS)

Athletic and physical 6'1" 205 lbs. frame with long limbs.  A two-time PBR Future Games participant; Dobson has a chance this spring to cement himself as one of the all-time greats in Catholic High's storied baseball program, as he has a real chance to become the school's all-time hits leader.  As promising as his potential future is as a position player, he's got just as much intrigue on the mound as well.  The Houston commit releases the ball from a lower 3/4 slot and has an ultra-competitive mindset, which likely profiles him as a reliever.  His fastball normally sits in the mid-80's, but he saw his velocity tick up over the summer, running it up to 88-90 mph.  Dobson tunnels his heavy, sinking two-seam heater well with a sweeping slider that has the chance to be a real swing & miss pitch at the next level.  He'll have the chance to impress this coming spring at Catholic High, as there will likely be a caravan of MLB scouts lining up at the Bears games to see fellow teammate William Schmidt, who is currently the 2nd ranked RHP in the country.

+ 2024 LHP/OF Bryson Pierce (Benton HS)

Projectable 6'2" 170 lbs. frame with plenty of room to continue adding strength.  Pierce was a member of our 2022 Future Games team as a two-way player.  The Benton HS product should hit at the top of the Tigers order this coming spring, as he's an athletic left-handed hitter with solid bat to ball skills.  His upside, however, is most likely on the mound, where the southpaw can run his fastball up to 90 mph.  We're excited to see the jumps and gains that the Louisiana Tech recruit has made over the summer, as will many other area scouts.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THIS WEEKEND (COMMITTED 2025 PROSPECTS)

+ 2025 SS Jack Ruckert (Catholic BR HS)

The 6'0" 175 lbs. shortstop looks to build on the impressive showing that he had on the summer circuit this coming weekend at his future collegiate home.  The LSU recruit is another household name in the state's 2025 class and is currently the 5th ranked overall prospect in our 2025 state rankings.  A left-handed hitter; Ruckert owns one of the sweetest strokes in the state, as he's able to get his barrel in the zone early and stay on the ball a long time.  Over the summer, he tapped into some potential power by swinging with more aggression and intent, while still maintaining his high-level strike awareness and bat to ball skills.

+ 2025 SS Casey McCoy (Dutchtown HS)

McCoy's meteoric rise into the Top 10 of our 2025 state rankings has been well documented, after he led off all spring for the Griffins, which is one of the reasons why he earned an invite to be a member on our Future Games team this summer, and he proved that he belonged on the summer's biggest stage at the Lakepoint Sports Complex.  McCoy finished his Future Games going 4-7 at the plate with a 2B, 3B, and 2 RBI, all while playing solid defense at both shortstop and second base.  For his performance, he earned multiple DI scholarship offers and ultimately chose to commit to the University of Louisiana, just a couple of weeks ago.

+ 2025 OF Ryan Darrah (Brother Martin HS)

6'3" 175 lbs. lean and athletic frame with broad shoulders and plenty of room to continue to add strength.  The Brother Martin HS product was another guy that really made a splash this past spring during the high school season for the Crusaders, as he earned Hitter of the Year honors, in the always competitive Catholic League, out of the New Orleans, LA area.  Darrah was another prospect that made the most out of his opportunity to be on our Future Games this summer, as he finished the event going 4-6 at the plate with a 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, 2 BB, and a SB.  What was most impressive about his performance, was his ability to drive the ball the other way, as all four of his base knocks were either up the middle or to the opposite field.  Just last week, Darrah announced his commitment to Arizona State University.

UNCOMMITTED 2024 & 2025 PROSPECTS TO WATCH (PITCHERS)

As mentioned above, this is arguably the most talented roster that we've ever had at a single event in Louisiana, especially uncommitted talent.  There will be plenty of uncommitted prospects for college recruiters to zero in on this coming weekend.  Below, we highlight just a few that we are ecstatic to see on Saturday and Sunday.

+ 2025 LHP Adam Guillet (Natchitoches Central HS)

Projectable and physical 6'3" 190 lbs. frame.  Guillet is one of the many uncommitted pitching prospects that we're really excited to see this weekend, as this will be his first PBR event.  The southpaw has a starter's profile with a 3-pitch mix, that includes a fastball that sits in the mid-80's, but we wouldn't be shocked to see that tick a little higher with some adrenaline flowing on Saturday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium.  Uncommitted left-handers are a hot commodity for college programs and with a good showing on Saturday, Guillet could create a lot of "buzz" for himself.

+ 2024 RHP Austin Pounds (Archbishop Hannan HS)

Long and lean 6'3" 170 lbs. frame to dream on.  The Archbishop Hannan HS product made quite the impression at our Senior Games just over a week ago, and he'll have a chance to increase his stock even more this coming weekend.  Pounds is a smooth mover down the slope with a long and loose arm action with a 3/4-high 3/4 release.  He sat 85-87 mph with his fastball, to go with an "11-5" shaped low-70's curveball and feel to land a 76-77 mph changeup to both right-handed and left-handed hitters.  His ceiling is already in a good place, but his projection of what he could possibly become is even greater.

+ 2025 RHP Cade Durbin (Parkview Baptist HS)

Athletic and wiry 6'0" 145 lbs. frame that is still developing.  Durbin is what we like to call a "data darling", as he's got a lot of metrics working in his favor.  At this summer's Future Games, he worked three scoreless innings giving up one hit with 4 K's.  The Parkview Baptist HS product sat 83-85 mph with his fastball, but you wouldn't have known it by the swings that opposing hitters took off of him, thanks to an average IVB of 18.4 inches and a max IVB of 21.9 inches.  The separator for Durbin, however, is his top to bottom low-70's curveball with an average spin rate of 2,743 RPM's.  He also showed that he can land a late-fading 71-73 mph change up as well.  Durbin has MLB bloodlines with dad, Chad, having pitched in the major leagues and he also just turned 16 years old, which likely means that he's going to have some significant jumps in the next 12-18 months.

OTHER UNCOMMITTED 2024 & 2025 PROSPECTS TO WATCH (PITCHERS)

+ 2025 RHP Logan Freche (Oak Forest Academy)

UNCOMMITTED 2024 & 2025 PROSPECTS TO WATCH (POSITION PLAYERS)

+ 2025 OF Marcus Gradney Jr. (St. Edmund Catholic HS)

Physical 6'0" 190 lbs. frame with a strong lower-half.  Gradney Jr. impressed at our Lake Charles Preseason ID back in January and carried that momentum through the spring high school season and the summer circuit.  The St. Edmund's HS product has some of the best raw power in the state's 2025 class, as evidenced by his 99 mph max exit velocity that he recorded with wood back in January.  Gradney Jr. swings with intent by aggressively rotating his lower-half to deliver a heavy barrel to contact.  A solid overall athlete, he's got a great opportunity to really announce his presence this coming weekend at Alex Box Stadium.

+ 2025 SS Brock Laird (Natchitoches Central HS)

Athletic 5'10" 170 lbs. frame.  Laird played a solid second base for the Chiefs last season, and will be asked to take over the shortstop position this coming year as a junior.  He was another guy that capped off a successful summer with a good showing at the Future Games, as he finished the tournament going 2-6 at the plate with a BB and a SB.  Laird earned Player of the Game honors for his 2-2 performance in our win against Mississippi in Game 3.

+ 2025 C Dylan Champagne (Dutchtown HS)

Long and lean 6'3" 175 lbs. frame with room to continue to add strength as he matures.  Champagne first caught our eye at our Baton Rouge Preseason ID back in January, thanks to a smooth left-handed stroke and athleticism behind the plate with solid catch and throw skills.  He's a very intriguing uncommitted prospect who has a chance to really get on college recruiters radars this weekend with a good showing.
