The state's top ranked player and one of the top ranked prep arms in the country continued to shine last week. Schmidt got the start against Central BR, facing off against the top southpaw in the state, in what will go down as the best pitching matchup of the year. The LSU recruit worked primarily off of his FB through the first three innings, working his heater up to a personal best 99 mph, which he hit three times, and sat 95-96 mph. He made the Wildcats hitters lives really tough, once he started mixing in his top-to-bottom 80-81 mph CB, and he also flashed a few CH's. Schmidt ended up tossing a complete-game, while giving up 1 ER on 3 H with 2 BB and 11 K's, to move his season record to 6-0 with a 0.57 ERA.
This was our second look at the state's top player and one of the top right-handed pitchers in the country, as he got the ball last Thursday against Live Oak. The LSU recruit once again turned in a quality outing, as he finished going 6 2/3 innings, while giving up 3 H and 1 ER with 3 BB and 4 K's. Of the three hits, only one was well struck, and the misses on his walks were small, as he finished the outing throwing 95 total pitches with 65 strikes to 30 balls. For the first three innings, Schmidt worked almost exclusively off of his FB at 94-98 mph, and didn't really go to his signature 79-81 mph CB (up to 3,000 RPM's) until the 4th adn 5th innings. He did flash a few really good CH's at 81-84 mph to some left-handed hitters, showing scouts that he does have a third pitch and confidently land it. All in all, it was another really good outing for the LSU recruit, as we move closer towards district play.
The state's top ranked prospect continues to raise the bar and reach new heights in each outing, and Thursday was no different. Schmidt got the start in our Week 1 Game of the Week against West Monroe, in a game that will likely be talked about around Baton Rouge, LA for a while. The LSU recruit worked his FB up to a personal best 98 mph in the 1st inning and sat 92-95 mph throughout the entirety of his 5 inning outing, and gave up only 3 H, 2 R, and 0 ER with 1 BB and 9 K's, and this was against a lineup that knows him very well, as most of them play on the summer circuit together with Knights Knation. To make his and the Bears night even better, he ended up hitting a walk-off RBI single to seal the Bears 4-3 win.
Yet another intriguing right-hander took to the hill for the Mariners: William Schmidt (Catholic Baton Rouge, LA; Mississippi State). The right-handed Bulldogs recruit who attends high school in Baton Rouge (#ironic) pitched off his 3000+ rpm curveball to strike out the first four hitters he faced. He also flashed a near average changeup at 77-79 and threw his fastball up to 94.
