If Gonzalez is the most instinctive player in the 2023 draft class, Shaw is 1B. He’s a high intellect player on the infield where he shows good actions and a quick first step. At times his hands and feet can get in each other's way, but there’s little doubt he will remain on the dirt at the next level. Likely his pro future is not at shortstop, but he projects to be above average defensively at either second or third. At the plate Shaw did not have his best performance during the three game tournament (4-for-13, 2 BB, 3 SO), but best showed his hit ability last summer in the Cape, leading the league in batting average at .360, while homering five times and slugging .574. After a large leg lift and stride, he swings with violent intent to do damage while controlling the barrel and showing the ability to shorten up and go the other way with two strikes. This feel to hit and his plus raw power allow him to produce hard contact to all fields. However, there is some concern that he may struggle against inner-half velocity with wood bats as a professional due to his long stride and, at times, a rushed swing. An adjustment will need to be made at some point. Presently a near average runner underway, he labors while doing so. This running motion will likely slow him down in the future, but it won't be due to a lack of hustle. Overall, Shaw is a skilled gamer with enough tools and late first round upside, dependent upon another productive season at the plate.

Cape Cod: A Day One prospect for next summer, Shaw brings a strength-based game to the diamond. He swings with a violent intent to do damage while controlling the barrel and showing the ability to shorten up and go the other way with two strikes. This feel to hit and his plus raw power allow him to produce hard contact to all fields. The right handed hitter led the Cape in batting average at .360, while homering five times and slugging .574. On July 18 he became the first Cape Cod player in 11 years to hit for the cycle. Defensively at shortstop, Shaw fielded everything he got to, but his range is more limited. He's presently a near average runner underway and labors a bit while doing so. This running style will likely slow him down in the future, but it won't be due to a lack of hustle. Overall, Shaw was a fun to watch prospect who gave everything he had on each play which is a difference maker on draft day.

7/28/20

5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed hitting infielder. He had a great workout as he is physically stronger and a better player than the last time we saw him. He ran a 6.69 sixty at the event. The approach in the infield is athletic and appropriate. He threw 82 mph across the diamond out of an easy pace to the fielding of the ball. The bat has an exit velocity of 102 mph. The setup is even in base and he gains minimal ground as he swings. The path is flat with lift at contact. The hands are extremely quick and he swings aggressively. He hammered the ball and ended the event on a home run.

Exit Velocity- 102 mph

New England Procase

5-foot-10, 178-pound,  a super athletic frame, hands and wrists are strong and quick. One of the better players at this event, a right-handed hitter, loose hands with rhythm to them, using a small controlled leg kick. The swing path is level to up, hands inside the baseball, barrel in the zone a longer time, with plenty of plate coverage. Showing enough pop to beat the outfielder,  punishing the baseball to all fields, a legit doubles machine at the next level. The tee exit velocity was clocked at 99 mph, baseball absolutely jumps off the bat. Defensively, threw 79 mph across the diamond, showed a correct approach, fields out front with little of wasted movement.  Can turn it from both sides of the bag, projects out more to play second long term, look for him to play at a high level.

Tee Exit Velocity: 99 mph

Arm Velocity: 79 mph

3/24/19

5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. The foot speed was impressive and he showed well with the glove. Threw 82 mph across the diamond as the arm strength continues to grow. The ability to move around infield spots is present. The bat has a tee exit velocity of 98 mph. Showed a bit more juice this time around. The setup is athletic and open to start. The path has a small amount of lift in it. The hands work extremely well and they are quick to contact. The bat is coming on and his game is trending up. Big time player.

2/09/19

5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. Ran a 6.73 sixty on the laser. The frame is beginning to fill out and his strength level is trending up. The approach in the infield is athletic and the feet stay active. Threw 81 across the diamond, more suited to be a second baseman at the higher level in college. The bat has a tee exit velocity of 93 mph. The setup is even in base, front foot steps into the swing. The hands work quickly, the path is strong and flat through the contact point.  Matt is a good player, and continues to improve his craft, most importantly he loves to play.

6/26/18

6-foot,175-pound switch hitting middle infielder, who put on a display at the event. He is a legit prospect.  Ran a 4.0 and a 4.01 down the line from the left and right side respectively. The tee exit velocity is 90 mph from the right-side and 88 mph from the left-side. The right-side set up is even, and he uses a knee to knee timing mechanism on the bottom half as the ball approaches. The swing is simple, flat to the ball. The bottom half is under control. The left-side is even in base, the hands set low. The bat path needs to be flattened and maneuvered with more authority from the left side.  In the game, he was really good from the left and right side, he can do both at the next level, FYI. The glove is solid, the feet work very well and he has plenty of arm strength to play all 3 infield spots. Threw 80 mph across the diamond. Even kicked out to centerfield and showed the ability to play there with ease. Big D1 prospect.

2/18/18

5-foot-10, 170-pound switch-hitting middle infielder who is developing very well. The actions are athletic and the movements are quick twitch. The glove and feet are solid defensively. Threw 81 mph across the diamond as that is  good jump from the last time we saw him. The bat has life in it from both sides, tee exit velocity of 94 mph from the right-side and 89 from the left side. Significant increase in ext velocity since the fall. The setup is similar on both sides of the plate, simple hand path and the bottom half of the swing is under control. Legit prospect that continues to get better.

9/17/17

5-foot-9, 160-pound switch-hitting middle infielder. Athletic player we have seen a number of times in the past 10 months. He continues to progress and make adjustments. He is trending the right way. Defensively, threw 76 mph across the diamond. The arm is improving and showing added strength. Has the ability to handle the pivot and play shortstop or second base. I will like to see how he handled centerfield as well, my thought is that he would fit nicely out there. Ran a 4.39/4.43 down the line from each respective side. The bat has a tee exit velocity of 82 from the left side. Sets up with his feet even, stays in his legs throughout the swing. The path is simple from the left-side. Path is clean to the ball. Tee exit velocity of 87 mph from the right-side. The set up is even with his feet. The bottom half is under control throughout the swing. The path is clean and he shows better bat strength from the right-side. He is developing very well as a player.

Tee Exit Velocity- L-82/R-87 mph
INF Velocity- 76 mph

6/27/17

5-foot-9, 160-pound switch hitting middle infielder probably more suited for second base. The skill set is advanced and he is a plus athlete. Ran a 4.29 from the right-side on his dig and a 4.06 from the left side on his dig. The hands are soft in the field and he can handle the pivot. Threw 71 mph across the diamond and moved well through and to the ball. At the plate, tee exit velocity of 86 from the right-side and 84 mph from the left-side. Both sides are similiar in swing. The feet are even and the barrel gets to the barrel with a proper and short path. He does cut off his swing after contact, would love to see him work all the way through the ball after contact. His game is spray the ball, use his feet and have an appropriate short game. Gook looking high level prospect.

3/05/17

5-foot-9, 160-pound switch hitting middle infielder with legit athleticsm.  Ran a 3.74 thirty at the event. At the plate, the left-handed swing has a tee exit velocity of 80 mph. Sets up with his feet even and gets heavy to the front foot too early. The swing path is simple and clean, strength is needed to aid development. The right-handed swing has a tee exit velocity of 85 mph to it. Sets up with his feet even and picks up and puts down the front foot as the ball approaches. The path is clean and simple as well, both right and left handed swings mirror one another. Defensively, showed excellent feet and glove work at the event. Threw 69 mph across the diamond with minimal effort in the throwing. Definitely a high level prospect. Guy to watch as he ages.

2018 FUTURE GAMES
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. What a difference a year makes, Matt had an excellent showing this year. Hammered the ball in the games, and played solid defensively throughout the week. Ran a 6.7 sixty on the laser. The glove is solid and the feet work in the field. I see him as an offensive second baseman at a higher level in college, but he could certainly play SS/3B if you need him to. Threw 82 mph across the diamond with accuracy. The bat has a tee exit velocity of 95 mph. The setup is even in base, uses a knee to knee approach on the bottom half. The hands work through the ball and he accelerates the bat through the ball. The path is simple and flat to the ball. Excellent prospect who plays with energy and grit.

Tee Exit Velocity- 95 mph
INF Velocity- 82 mph

2017 FUTURE GAMES
5-foot-9, 160-pound switch-hitting middle infielder. Ran a 6.97 at the event. Threw 74 mph across the diamond as he is better suited for second base or centerfield. The athleticsm is through the roof as he is quick twitch. The glove is solid, and he moves to and through the ball. Needs to get his hands together on the pivot as he takes too long currently. The left-handed swing has a tee exit velocity of 84 mph. Sets up with his feet even, front foot slightly open to start. Picks up and puts down the front foot as the ball approaches him. The hands work freely and the path is simple. The right-handed swing has a tee exit velocity of 89 mph. Sets up close with his feet, using a pick up and put down of the front foot as the ball approaches. Gains ground to the ball as he initiates the hand load. The path is simple and he maneuvers the barrel better from the right side. Good looking prospect.
