Sometimes when you scout you see a pitcher’s best outing (Andrew Abbott) and sometimes you see a guy’s worst. In Vasil’s case I likely saw his worst, but not before he fired 98 mph rockets to the plate in the first inning of his start against Wake Forest. With a quick, compact arm action and a tall-and-fall delivery, Vasil scattered his 92-98 mph heater throughout his 77-pitch, 2.1 IP start. He allowed five runs on five hits and walked four. The timing in his delivery was out of sync which caused his control to come and mostly go. Additionally, Vasil showed three offspeed offerings which included a firm 86-89 mph changeup, a 84-88 casted cutter/slider and a below average 77-78 curve. He slowed his arm just prior to the release of his change-of-pace and showed limited feel for his curveball which is typically a sharp downer spinning into the low-80s. Overall, Vasil is a much better pitcher and prospect than what I witnessed on this look. For the season he has posted a 6-4 record to go along with a 4.40 ERA in 61.1 IP and will likely be considered starting around the 3rd round this July.
Named to Team USA 18U trials roster.
One of the biggest winners of the day. The Virginia recruit has a sturdy-strong 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame with wide shoulders and room for continued physical development. He has a short, compact arm action from a high-3/4 slot with a low-effort delivery and works downhill well. His fastball, which ranged between 91-94 mph in the first inning, comes in at a steep angle. He pitched at 90-92 in the second inning. His 72-75 mph curveball showed depth with 11/5 action. Vasil pitched two innings of scoreless baseball, yielding three hits and no walks while striking out two.
Athletic right-hander with a projectable frame and size. The slot is slightly above 3/4 and the arm is quick and fast out front. The delivery is on-line and he does a good job of controlling the glove side to home. Tracking of the shoulders is done well for a young man at his age. The frame can take on added weight, as this guys ceiling is sky high. Saw him pitch in late spring of 2016. The fastball was up to 89, with arm side run. The breaking ball had an 11/7 shape to it, an out pitch at the next level. Showed a good feel for the changeup.
