5/13/23

Sophomore-eligible by age for this year’s draft, Mooney continues to build on his strong freshman campaign. Currently batting .330 with a .453 OBP and .520 SLG, Mooney is seen by the industry as a prospect who lacks a ton of ceiling, but one who does have a high floor. He can make every play in every direction defensively and is an aggressive and confident athlete. He runs better than average (16-for-20 stolen bases this season) and shows above average arm strength. At the plate the righthanded hitter has more doubles power than over the fence (16 doubles, 6 home runs), but he is hitting the ball harder this season than last, while also hitting it in the air more often. He has nearly doubled his ISO from .100 in 2022 to .190 this spring. He also controls the zone with the same number of walks and strikeouts (31) and just a 13% strikeout rate this season. Beyond the talent and tools, Mooney also has the intangibles. He’s the heartbeat of Duke baseball as the clubhouse leader and is clutch in the big moments. He’s a rare talent that not only plays at a high level, but he makes others around him do the same. Expect Mooney to be selected in the second round.

Cape Cod: Mooney entered his freshman season with tremendous fanfare (No. 6 Impact Freshman) as his stellar play as a highly touted prep player was undeniable. And his pedigree is easy to see. He can make every play in every direction defensively and is an aggressive and confident athlete. He runs plus (4.19 H-1B from the right side) and shows above average arm strength. He also answered the bell for many of the lofty expectations placed on him as a true freshman with a production slash of .292/.393/.392 this past spring. The right handed hitting middle infielder then continued his development with solid production (.261/.326/.398) and five home runs (one an inside-the-park against Bourne on July 22) this summer. Mooney has star college player, as well as a likely early round selection written all over him, whether it's in 2023 as a sophomore-eligible, or 2024 as a junior.
