The 6-foot-6, 240-pound senior outfielder had done double-duty as a wide receiver and tight end on the gridiron for the Mississippi State football team until this past fall when he decided to dedicate his athletic pursuits exclusively to baseball. This choice has led to an uptick on the diamond this spring. With plus raw power he has produced 12 home runs and a .310 batting average. His swing is compact, but raw and there is swing/miss with 11 walks vs 42 strikeouts. And as one would imagine, he has a plus-plus run tool. This speed gives him the ability to play center field, yet he's seen the majority of his time in left where he looked to be a solid defender. He has also stolen four bases in four attempts for a club that rarely runs (just ten total team attempts in SEC play this season). Cumbest also showed good base running instincts going first to third on a ground ball base hit to the outfield. Nicknamed "Mule", Cumbest is not a high round prospect, but he may receive some consideration on Day Three as a superior athlete who might just be scratching the surface of his baseball future.
Long and athletic 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher with clean, easy arm action, high-3/4 release with some effort. Smooth rhythm, in-line direction, lands square and athletic. Fastball sat 81-85 mph, slight downhill tilt Flashed changeup with fastball arm speed and fading action 76-78 mph.
