Long and lean athletic build, projects well physically. 6.69 in the sixty, works around the ball well in the outfield, very accurate throws, fields the ball cleanly, has some more arm strength. Also plays second base and has the athleticism to develop. Left handed hitter, tall open stance, simple swing mechanics with an inside swing path, stays short and direct to the ball, low effort contact approach, line drive contact to all fields, has some hand strength at contact. Projectable athlete who should continue to develop.
4/26/19: At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, Christian is a quick twitch middle of the diamond athlete with power/speed combo tools package. Things come easy to him and can be mistaken for having a low motor. He just does things with a lot less effort than others. He's a plus runner underway with good acceleration. Got an average jump on a steal of second, running a 3.33. Is 11-for-14 on stolen bases this spring and 20-for-25 during his two-year college career. Showed an average arm with short, tentative arm action, yet solid carry to his target. Likely a plus arm from the outfield where he can lengthen it out and let it loose. Former outfielder turned shortstop this season who is still learning the position with developing instincts on the dirt. For the season he is fielding .929 with 14 errors in 197 chances. However, three of those errors were in the same game at Austin Peay, a tough place to play infield from my experience over the years as a former college coach. He has the hands and plenty of quickness for plus range, but his angles are raw. Offensively, his quick twitch strength and bat speed give him above average raw power from the left side, yet the loop in his swing and his bat head in/out of the zone make him vulnerable to a variety of pitches and locations. He thrives on pitches down the middle to middle-in, but struggles with movement away. Last summer he led the wood bat Coastal Plain League with 19 home runs, slugging .702 (.392 ISO) in 197 plate appearances. With the power also comes the strikeouts. Christian has struck out 65 times (vs 18 walks) in 180 plate appearances this spring (36%) and carries a career strikeout rate of 33% which will push him down nearly every draft board due to his analytics. However, since his new Rx for contacts in early April and a move to the middle of the box, Christian has seen a boost in his offensive production. Previous to April 5 he was 17-for-96 (.177) with four home runs in 96 at-bats for a .365 SLG%. Since that time he is batting .298 with five home runs in 57 at-bats for a .632 SLG%. His conference slash of .288/.376/.630 is also markedly better than his overall .222/.322/.464. Area scouts who emphasize the positives with his tools should be able to make a push for Christian this June. There are just not too many athletes like him in the college game. As a sophomore-eligible prospect, his signability will ultimately determine where he is selected. (Seifert)
7/10/18: 6 feet 2, 180-pound athletic build. Hits from the left side using an athletic, open stance. Loose hands with above average bat speed. Gets the barrel out and turned around a good fastball. Homered to right field on a 0-2 slider (off Wells) that stayed up on the inner third of the plate. Did a good job early in the game of keeping his barrel through the zone, did pull off some late. Competes every at bat. Overall, loose swing with good hands and projection with room to add strength. (Matt Payne)
