4/2/19: Leadoff hitter for the Chants who uses all fields and has a very good eye at the plate. Elite-level career walk rate of 18.8% and nearly 22% this spring. With well below average power production (career .104 ISO), Wood will need to concentrate on driving balls into the gaps and using his speed for extra bases at the pro level. Sets up with an even stance in the back of the box. Rocks back with a bat tilt load. Good weight transfer forward. Hits against a firm front side. High finish to his swing. Was slow out of the box, running a 4.25 down the line. However, Wood is a plus-plus runner underway with base stealer instincts; 45 steals in 54 attempts during his two and one-half season college career, including 12 of 13 this season. Below average arm strength, but showed a quicker release. Steady defender at the keystone, future average at the MLB level. Potential Day Two draft pick who profiles as a utility type that should be able to play second base and left field while relying on hit and on-base ability in order to provide the greatest value at the next level. (Seifert)
8/8/18: 5’9, 175 pounds. Smooth athlete with quick actions as a runner and defender. Steady ball player who displayed an advanced approach at the plate with exceptional pitch recognition skills. As a sophomore at Coastal Carolina, Wood walked 52 times against only 25 strikeouts in 223 at-bats. He kept up that pace this summer and again produced more BB’s (27) than K’s (23). If Wood can flash more power to go with his above average on-base skills, he will make himself a much more enticing prospect in 2019. (D Jurik)
