Mirabal, a solidly built 2017 right-handed hitting catcher, stands at 5-foot-11 and weighs 190 pounds, ran a 7.40 60, a personal best. Offensively- Starts from a square slightly crouched base with the hands above the back shoulder and barrel of the bat a bit more than 45-degrees from the ground. Gets to the launch phase by using a lead leg kick while the weight makes a slight shift to the backside. Gets plus drive from the back hip keeping the hands back and above the back shoulder in strong position to attack the ball. Gets good extension thru the ball finishing with a one-handed long follow through. Showed plus power from the pull side gap to the line. Explosive at and thru the point of contact. Recorded an exit velocity of 86 MPH but has been as high as 89 MPH at previous events. Defensively- Worked out at shortstop as well as catcher. From shortstop, showed athletic movements fielding the ball out in front of the body. Funnels the ball to the center of the body, quick transfer with short arm action, however has a tendency to double tap before releasing the ball. Recorded an arm velocity of 82 MPH, (+2 MPH from January). Behind the plate, has a slight turn down the first base line with the lower half. Received the ball well, quietly presenting the ball well out in front of the body working from outside the ball on corner pitches. Showed plus arm strength on throws to second. With some adjustments to the transfer, such as bringing the hands to the center of the body rather than sweeping both hands from the hip, will improve the 2.03 pop time and could get to a sub 2.0. Arm velocity was recorded at a personal best 74 MPH from behind the plate. This athletic catcher/middle infielder keeps getting better and will be a welcomed addition to a college program in the fall of 2017.
