Scout Evaluation

Joseph Karpierz, Shaker, 2022, NY

Position: SS/2B

Body: 6-foot, 185-pound lean athletic build.

Hit: (RHH) Projectable. Starts in a balanced wide stance with a smooth load, then uses a small stride. Developing and quick bat speed. Good extension on his finish, uphill loose swing. Gap to gap aggressive approach.

Power: 91 mph exit velocity, average 78.5 mph. 67.8 mph bat speed average. 22.5 mph hand speed average.

Defense:  (IF) Sure soft hands, athletic fluid footwork, clean natural exchange. Above average and fluid.  Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally.

Arm: 82 mph infield velocity. Loose arm action, ¾ slot, consistent accuracy.

Speed: 7.50 (60-yard).

Physical: Strong, athletic 6-foot, 180lb frame with increased feel for the game in all phases. The Xavier University commit ran a 7.09 60-yard dash.

Offensively: RHH - Balanced, even stance as the knees showed a slight bend at the start; utilized a short lift and replace stride out towards the pitcher as the hands operated with a quick trigger through a flat path into the hitting zone. Hit behind the ball with intent and high level bat to ball skills, staying on the barrel with hard contact to all fields during a smooth batting practice round. Found his best results to LCF gap, handling pitches on the inner half with lift (50% fly ball rate via Trackman) up to 344 feet at his peak. Easy doubles power and can occasionally run it out of the yard to pull in a top of the order type skillset at the next level. Mature approach that carried over into game action with minimal swing/miss and good barrel %.

Defensively: The primary shortstop demonstrated above-average defensive actions, patrolling the left side with confidence in either direction. Some of the better hand quickness and transfers in the state, working the ball in/out of the glove with pace and on its way to the target accurately from H ¾ slot (83 mph arm). Natural shortstop feel and finished off the play on the run with ability to throw across his body with strength.

Physical: Strong, athletic 6-foot, 180-pound frame with advanced feel in all phases of the game. 7.20 runner in the 60-yard dash.

Offensively: RHH - Balanced, even stance with a tight hand position flashing rhythm next to the ear to start; short lift and replace stride coupled with a noticeable barrel tip gave way to a slightly uphill launch through the hitting zone, extremely connected swing with increased feel for the hit tool; peppered both gaps with hard contact and liked to lift the ball out over the plate (55% fly ball rate). A 317 foot peak batted ball distance and 89 mph bat-exit velocity points towards doubles power at the moment, which should allow for the ability to hit for average down the line using a solid 27% line drive rate. Brought consistent bat speed to the table (70+ mph) giving confidence that he can handle velocity at the next level.

Defensively: The primary shortstop had one of the more impressive defensive rounds from the entire winter of PBR NY events. Easy feel for the body in space with a quick first step and high level confidence in the routes. Arrived on time consistently, letting the glove hand play loosely out in front of the middle-left side; lightning quick hands allowed for above-average pace across the diamond. Flashed advanced range in either direction where he shines the most making plays on the round with smooth, rhythmic actions. INF - 84 mph

Physical: 6-foot-0, 170 pounds; lean, athletic build. 7.3 runner in the 60.
Offensively: RHH. Wide stance with some athletic bend in the knees, bat slightly wrapped behind his head; uses a small stride forward with a weight shift, the hands move just slightly back toward the catcher. Active lower half with twitchy actions, turns the hips quickly with short swing, keeps his hands tight to his body on the turn. Hit the ball effectively to the pull side, used his short swing to turn on the high and up pitch and pull it to left; peak Trackman exit velocity of 87 MPH.
Defensively: Slightly bent over with some bend in the knees too, weight shifted on his toes; Takes small prep steps and laid back steps to the ball, plays low to the ground. Good hands that take the ball in well with a smooth transfer; short arm action that slightly hooks behind into a 3/4 slot. INF - 81 MPH.
Pitching: Works at a good pace in the delivery to a defined balance point, keeps good posture down the slope. Short arm action, keeps a bent elbow throughout and throws from a 3/4 slot. FB: Peak velo of 84 MPH, while sitting 80-83 MPH. Displayed a good fastball that he was able to control in the zone with ease. CB: 70-73 MPH. Curveball plays more like a slurve pitch with sharp HZ break. CH: 76-78 MPH. Effectively kills the spin on his CH giving it some good dive to the arm side.

Physical: 5-foot-11, 160-pounds. Physical; lean frame; athletic build; 4.26 home-to-1B.
Offensively: RHH. Feet a little wider than shoulder width; taller with some slight bend in his knees; light leg lift with short stride; a little bat wrap behind his head Quick path in and out the zone; quick hands; slight upwards swing path; long one-handed finish, consistent hard contact. pull-side approach; lifts the ball with power to pull-side gap. 89 MPH raw exit velocity.
Defensively: Quick hands and transfer, fields the ball out front; smooth glove work; small pre-hop for timing; able to play laterally and on the run, very smooth all around; great feed to second with proper footwork. Short arm swing; low 3/4 arm slot.  INF - 78 MPH.
Pitching: Builds pace with high leg lift, striding out to a slightly closed landing into a repeatable release and follow through. Drops out of the glove to a neutral slot before getting to 3/4 release.

CB: 69-72 MPH. Locates in the zone with sharp, 11-5 break.
