Stands 6-foot-2, 215-pounds with a strong athletic build. Ran a 7.34 60, and popped an event high 100-mph exit velocity. He was one of the biggest standouts on the event stealing the show at the plate showing well above average power to both gaps driving multiple triples deep to center field throughout the games. Offensively-Sets up with hands high and a balanced base, has incline throughout path with explosive hand speed. With plenty of natural power, he does a good job of staying within himself and not over-swinging or pulling off balls. Drove one hard triple to center off a solid LHP as well. Defensively- Projects as a 1B but shows athletic ability to move to a corner in the outfield as well. Pitching- FB velocity was at 76-78 MPH showing good athletic ability on the mound. Breaking ball had some good shape to it. Though he looks to be solid on the bump he looks to project at a very high level at the plate.
April 2016
Stands 6-foot-2, 215-pounds with a strong thick frame. Build like a tight end and shows athletic ability across the board on the ball field. He started on the mound for the Spartans this week with a FB that sat 78-81 mph with a +CB consistent at 68-70 mph. He mixed in a change up occasionally that was 75-mph. Josh uses a slow controlled and compact delivery. An athletic two way guy who also swings it from the left side with + pop at the plate.
Preseason All-State (February 28, 2016)
One of the more physical prospects we have seen over-the-course of the showcase season, Surowiec has a body-frame built like a hard-noised linebacker. Offensively - Standing 6-foot-2, 215-pounds with thick broad shoulders, the WNY LHP/1B showed an impressive 93-mph exit velocity. Simple relaxed setup, not a lot of movement from his lower half. Hand path is compact and strong, barrel gets level at contact with full-extension and lift. Easy power projection. Defensively - active footwork around the bag staying in an athletic position, fielding the ball out away from his body. Clean transfer with an accurate arm. Pitching - Smooth repeatable delivery, belt high knee lift, hands separate on his knee decent. Falls hard on his back leg as he drives towards home, long-back arm action, releases from a high-3/4 slot with a fastball topping 81 mph, sitting 78-79. With the changeup he shows feel with some arm-side fade at 71-74. Curveball has later action, 2/8 shape at 67-70.
