8/8/2017

6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Threw 78 mph down to second base as the arm strength is solid.  Pop time of 2.05 during the workout. The feet need to get a bit more under control during the transfer as he gains too much ground, won’t work with the hitter in the box. Makes up for it in arm velocity.  The receiving needs to improve, I suggest catching off a pitching machine, working on securing the catch and softening the glove. Ran a 4.7 down the line on his dig to first base. Tee exit velocity of 90 mph as the hands are strong and the path is solid. Starts with his feet even, steps into the swing. The swing is flat and strong to the ball, slight bat wrap to start. The bottom half does gain distance to the ball as it comes at the plate. Solid bat, two singles in game play.

NY Games (June 25-27, 2017)
Sturdily-built 5-foot-11, 210-pound catcher, ran a 7.73/60. Offensively - smooth, fluid swing, quick to the ball with strong hands, appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps bat on level path through the zone with full extension after contact and an exit velocity of 88 MPH, repeatable motion, consistent barrel contact, further engagement of the lower half will produce benefits. Defensively - fundamentally sound, stays low through the receiving process with a wide base, quick transfer to throwing hand for a position velocity of 74 MPH and a POP time of 2.05-2.09.

60: 7.61
Catcher Velo: 76 MPH
Pop Time: 2.02-2.04
Winter Open-NY (February 12, 2017)
Extremely well put together catcher with a strong lower half at 6-foot-0 210 pounds. He ran an improved 7.41 60 and  4.53 home-to-first. Offensively- Balanced setup; feet even with the barrel in the 45 degree range. Quiet timing with a short load and stride; stays behind the ball with an aggressive lower half. Line drive/flyball results with a loose, one arm finish. Middle of the order type, peak exit velocity was 84 MPH, just a shade under his personal best of 87 MPH. Repeatable efforts pitch to pitch, demonstrates confidence and comfort at the plate. Defensively- Spread secondary setup; throwing hand off-set behind the glove. Exchanges feet tight to the plate, gaining ground towards 2B. Traditional catcher's arm action from a high 3/4 slot. Arm strength with a significant bump to 75 MPH, best pop times stayed in the 2.00 range at 2.03-2.19. Displayed more of a feel at the plate and behind the dish, development on the rise for the 2018 grad.
Individual Player Evaluation (June 15, 2016)
Alessi is a solid 5-foot-10 205 pound C/1B. He ran a 7.83 60 and 5.01 home-to-1B. Offensively- Alessi starts in a slightly open stance with his hand position up and off the body; strides back with an easy effort. Controlled load back of the hands; aggressive lower half effort with a short to contact approach. One handed finish off the body. Line drive/gap results with some lift to left center. Middle of the order threat as he progresses. Exit velocity of 87 MPH was 9 MPH jump from June 2015.  Defensively- Max sets up in balanced and square primary and secondary positions behind the plate. Brings ball back to center of his body when receiving; could be softer but movements are correct. Gains positive ground with throwing footwork to 2B; quick exchange as throwing hand trails the glove with minimal separation. Arm strength has improved to 70 MPH while bringing his pop times down to the 2.01-2.09 range. Throws come out with a low trajectory and maintain their plane on the bag. Will be a sub 2.0 once all is said and done.
PA Underclass Games
5-foot-10, 205-pound right-handed hitter. Started from an open stance and strode to slightly open. Begins with a high hands load but has a tendency to drop hands from a point of strength prior to attacking baseball. Shows good balance throughout swing path with some potential for some power with maturity. Perhaps the biggest thing offensively for Max is to ramp up his aggressiveness early in the count, so as to avoid hitting with two strikes as often as he did at this event. Ran an 8.34 60-yard dash. Showcased 78-mph exit velocity and 69-mph arm strength during workout. Posted workout pop times of 2.20-2.30. Could shave some time by getting feet started sooner, in order to sync them up with the catch/transfer process. Has some recoil at end of throws, which would pick up some carry if he got out over his front side on release.
