NY Games (June 25-27, 2017)
Athletic 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-hander. Offensively - effective load with appropriate pre-pitch movement, compact swing, quick to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the zone, gets full extension with repeatable motion and exit velocity of 89 MPH, drives the ball to all fields, makes consistent barrel contact. Pitching - hides ball well and pounds strike zone with unorthodox motion, 78-79 MPH fastball has late movement and stays down in the zone, keeps batters off balance with curveball at 67-70 MPH, induces weak contact. Defensively - sure hands with basic footwork, unorthodox throwing motion makes accuracy difficult, outfield velocity at 78 MPH.

April 2017

Garton was in the DH slot to start the game showing some early count aggression. Athletic build with a low hand position just off his shoulder. The RHH had a walk and an infield single. Barreled up his contact with a flat in the zone swing. Will drive in some runs this year on early count fastballs. Came in for relief of DeMateo; pounding the zone with his fastball and showing a very tidy slider with late tilt; legitimate secondary offering. Works from a high arm slot with some heaviness to his fastball. Also had good feel for his change/splitter as he attacked some LHH to seal the deal and pick up the win late.
Winter Open (February 26, 2017)
Well put-together 6-foot-1 185 pound OF/RHP who ran a 7.39 60 and a 4.44 home-to1B. Offensively- Sets up in a slightly spread stance hitting from a slight crouch. Minimal take back of the hands with a quick stride forward. Stays behind the ball with a relatively shot stroke into the zone. Assortment of results; foul line-to-foul line with some pop to his pull side. Exit velocity peaked at 90 MPH, a 4 MPH improvement off his previous best. Middle of the order mindset. Defensively- Controlled approach in the outfield; fields ball outside of lead leg with a pronounced crowhop. Carries plenty of momentum into his throws. Arm strength peaked at 77 MPH, a new personal best with more in the tank. Pitching- Sets up center rubber with a short side step up to a mid-chest balance point. Rides back leg into a slightly open stride direction. Glove arm rolls under early causing him to pull off to the 1B side. Fastball sat 78-79 MPH with CB rolling out of the hand early at 67-68 MPH. Did not show full compliment of secondary offerings.
Big Apple Preview (October 8, 2016)
Athletic frame at 6-foot-1 175 pounds for the RHP/OF. He ran an improved 7.25 60. Offensively- Starts with weight pre-loaded, slightly outside his shoulders with hands just off back shoulder. Short take back with and up-down stride. Stays behind the ball with aggressive lower half. Showed some pop to his pull side; line drive/gap results. Exit velocity peaked at 82 MPH but we've had as high as 86 MPH back in June. Defensively- Active footwork in the OF during his approach; decelerates some once he receives the ball. Would benefit from carrying that effort into his throws. Fields ball on the ground outside lead foot with clean transition. Glove side rotation when throwing will help with extension and velocity; up 3 MPH to 75 MPH from the outfield. Pitching- Sets up center rubber with a quiet drop step to a shoulder high balance point. Works over the top from a 1 O'Clock arm slot. Aggressive finsih up and over front side. Works FB to both sides of the plate, sitting 75-77 MPH  (up 2-3 MPH on average). Sharp 12-to-6 CB is go to secondary at 66-67 MPH. Flashed a change up at 71-73 MPH and a split at 72 MPH.
Individual Player Evaluation (June 30, 2016)
Garton is an athletic 6-foot-1 175 pound RHP/OF. He ran a 7.31 60 and a 4.95 home-to-1B. Offensively- Garton sets up even in his stance with weight pre-loaded over backside. Bat angle at 45 degrees with minimal loading actions. Short stride forward as weight stays back; triggers an aggressive lower half; swing path short into the zone with an accelerated 2-hand finish out in front. Line drive/gap potential; showed some pop to his pull side. Juice in the bat with an exit velocity of 86 MPH.   Defensively- In the outfield Garton aggressively pursues the ball; fielding out in front. At times unsure of the type of footwork to be used to throw. A full fledged crowhop would untangle a few things and let him keep his momentum. Throws were accurate with good carry; peaking at  72 MPH. More in the tank here once throwing footwork is established. Pitching- On the mound Garton displayed exceptional command of all pitches, a rarity considering the repertoire he ran out to the mound. Delivery wise he works from center rubber with an easy drop step/pivot to a center chest leg drive. Arm action is long and without restriction. FB sat 73-75 MPH with life and command to both sides of the plate. CB featured late biting 12-to-6 action; SL with traditional right-to-left tilt but more along the lines of a cutter with overall action and velocity (70-72 MPH). Change up held it’s plane at 67-68 MPH and splitter was in the similar range at 69-70 MPH with the traditional late downward tumble. Rarely will an arm possesses ability to command so many offerings but he is able to do so. Continued fastball development remains top priority.
Summer 2015
Ryan stands 6 foot 150 pounds with an athletic build. The RHP is a bulldog on the mound with a good feel for his secondary pitches. Once his FB command improves he will be a very tough arm to deal with. At the plate Ryan hits from a slightly leaned over stand with minimal timing mechanisms. Has some pop in his bat but needs more game experience.
