A fastball with hop has a flat approach angle and visually jumps through the zone. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher swing and miss average. Hop+ of 100 is MLB average.
Fastball
Sink+
A fastball with sink has low backspin and drops through the strike zone. When thrown down in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher ground ball percentage and lower launch angle. Sink+ of 100 is MLB average.
Fastball
Rise+
A fastball with rise has a high percentage of backspin. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher fly ball percentage. Rise+ of 100 is MLB average
Stands 6-foot-0, 150-pounds from a lean projectable build. Slightly open stance in the box with low leg lift into forward move. Subtle hand load to create separation. Showed contact to all fields with a level swing. Defensively receives with confidence, active and quick behind the plate, 70 mph arm-strength from a high 3/4 slot, 2.09 best pop-time with accuracy to the bag.
10/30/16
Smith, a 2020 right-handed hitting outfielder and pitcher, stands at 5-foot-4 and weighs 110 pounds, ran a 8.16 60. Offensively- Starts with a square balanced lower half feet directly under the shoulders with a slight bend in both knees while the hands are in front of the back shoulder with the barrel of the bat much greater than 45-degrees. Gets to the launch phase with a slight lifting of the front foot with a moderate stride towards the pitcher while the hands are loaded straight back outside the shoulder. During batting practice, sprayed the ball from the pull side gap to the opposite field line, showing an advanced approach to hit the ball where it was thrown. Recorded an exit velocity of 67 MPH, but could increase that with an ability to keep the barrel tighter thru the zone which would help extension and create more backspin. Defensively- Approaches the ball with athletic movements, fielding the ball on the glove side of the body or above the glove side shoulder on balls hit in the air. Funnels the ball to the center of the chest where the transfer takes place. Create long arm action getting fairly good extension with the backside, however could increase the carry and velocity on throws if the front foot could stay more aligned with the target rather than drifting open to the glove side. Recorded an arm velocity of 66 MPH on the day. Pitching- Starts from the first base side of the rubber, with the toes pointed at a 45 degree angle to home plate, with both hands set at the waist. Gets to the gathered position by taking a slight step towards the first base line while the pivot foot remains quiet while the hands elevate chin height and drop slightly to the chest before separation takes place. Sticks the landing with a slightly closed toe and tight front side with the glove staying inside of the body between the chest and lead hip. Worked the fastball, thrown from a very high ¾ arm slot, to both sides of the plate and showed an ability to get good tilt and keep the ball in the lower third of the zone at 67 MPH. Changeup registered at 61 MPH, good differential from the fastball, showed quality depth and rotation, showing arm ride run and sink.
