Physical: Large and sturdy 5-foot-11, 200-pound frame with plenty of physicality found throughout the actions. 7.68 runner in the 60-yard dash.
Offensively: RHH. Crouched, even stance utilizing a balanced setup as the hands showed comfortability with slight rhythm high at the head. Showed a lift-and-replace stride to initiate slightly uphill barrel path into the hitting zone with present juice to all fields. Sprayed the ball around during a standout batting practice round hitting balls off of both the RCF and LCF fences. Consistent, short stroke while on time at the front of the plate creatine leverage with strong wrists. Got violent swings off in game action as well while recording a top bat-exit velocity of 94 mph according to Trackman Baseball.
Defensively: The primary backstop featured a soft glove hand while receiving with adequate feel for beating the ball to the spot. Pop times ranged from 2.07-2.19 showcasing short and quick straight line footwork with intent out of the crouch coupled with a quick trigger out of a high ¾ slot with a small arm circle. The catch and throw skills are solid at present with the ability to command the running game. Worked hard to beat the ball to the spot while blocking, deadening the ball over the plate. C - 72 mph …. The third baseman displayed average footwork while arriving to the ball on time to the fielding window, fielded the ball in the middle of his body with adequate momentum towards the target. Accurate, high ¾ slot using a short arm circle with a hitch in it. INF - 79 mph
Physical: 5-foot-11, 199-pounds. Compact, projectable frame. 7.71 runner in the 60; 4.5 home-to-1B. Offensively: RHH. Balanced slightly open stance, small leg kick, simple load action Flatt barrel path, hands get through the zone strongly, mix of level one- and two-handed finishes. Strong contact across the field. 91 MPH raw exit velocity.Defensively: 2.08-2.15 pop times. Upright balanced stance, strong glove work with smooth ball transition, throws accurately around the bag. Long arm swing, mid 3/4 arm slot. C - 70 MPH.
At the plate, the right handed hitter stands in the box in a open tall stance. Takes a short stride towards the pitcher before attacking the hitting zone. The 2022 graduate sprayed the ball all over the field at the Last Chance event. Impressive bat speed and a lot more in the tank. Defensively, the catcher sets up in an upright position before receiving the baseball. The catcher displayed active footwork behind the plate and quick release from a mid 3/4 arm slot. Pop time range was 2.03-2.13.
Merkel has a compact, but solid body type at 5-foot-7, 160-pounds. He ran a 5.00 home to 1B. Offensively– Merkel starts with an open stance and has a front foot tap to start his load. The front foot finishes slightly closed. His hands start high with the bat resting on his shoulder. Merkel keeps his hands still and is quick and direct to the hitting zone. He has good extension of his arms and follow through. His exit velocity is 66 MPH with results that play better than that. Defensively – Creates positive angles; works through the ball with momentum, arm strength at 64 MPH.
