Diamond Pro Workout (January 14, 2017)
Staffieri stands 6 feet tall and weighs in at 165 pounds, with a broad frame that shows he will be able to hold more weight and muscle in the future. Showed good speed and athleticism with a 4.11 home to first time. Offensively- Starts with feet slightly wider than shoulders, knees bent, hands aligned with back shoulder. Uses a short stride and front foot lands slightly open. Does good job of loading hands. Drives back hip to the ball, using a rotational swing to create a 69 MPH exit velocity. Good extension with a high finish helps him to elevate the ball. Defensively- In the outfield, approaches the ball with short choppy steps, and transitions into a long crow hop. A clean, long arm action and good follow through produces 71 MPH throws. As an infielder, approaches the ball smoothly and sets up with a wide base. Fields ball back inside body, and hands will work smoother out in front of him. Inconsistent footwork limits some velocity on his throws, but he is still able to produce 70 MPH throws. Showed good body control on slow roller ground ball. Pitching- Sets up with his hands in front of his chest and feet close together on the middle of the rubber. Uses a small side step to allow his right foot to pivot onto the rubber and brings front knee to waist height at his balance point. Drives hard off back leg and lands directly in line with home plate. Arm slot is straight over the top with good extension and follow through. FB was 71 MPH. Kept good arm speed with changeup that was thrown at 67 MPH.
