Eastern NY Prospect Preview (August 2, 2016)

Huffman is a filled out 6-foot-2 210 pound C who ran an improved 8.41 60.  Offensively-   At the plate Huffman starts in a slightly open setup with an upper body lean towards the plate. Stays behind the ball into contact; line drive results with some pull side pop. Exit velocity up 1 MPH to 83 MPH. Best swings at this event compared to past outings; more compact into the zone with a predominantly two-handed finish; starting to repeat his efforts. Defensively- Athletic setup at the plate; stays low coming out of the chute despite his size. Footwork continues to be efficient with improved arm strength (up to 75 MPH from 72 MPH). Quick transfer; throws maintain on a line. Improved pop times, down to a personal best of 2.00-2.10 pop time. Improved measurables along with on field performance point to Huffman being a sleeper pick in the 2017 class.

April 2016

Solid frame; Pop to Pop 2.15-2.20; fundamental behind the plate. Needs to be more vocal on field, take leadership role.  Hitting-struck out first two at bats and was clearly frustrated (took it with him out to the field); 3rd at bat drilled a solid  RBI double deep into the Left-Center gap. The potential to improve and good physical tools would make him worth a follow going forward.

NY State Open ID (January 31, 2016)

Andrew has gained on the physical end, now 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds. He ran an improved 8.52 60 and a 4.77 home-to-1B. Offensively- Andrew starts with an even stance with weight towards back leg. He uses a slight load, keeping his bat angle around 30 degrees with a short stride for his timing. Stays back into contact with an adequate lower half rotation wise. Some locking out of the front knee into contact creates a spin off with his finish. Mostly pull side line drive and groundball results. Looks more comfortable at the plate then back in August. Improved his exit velocity to 82 MPH. Defensively- Andrew continues show fundamental throwing footwork, specifically to his glove side. Throws were online with a quick transfer. When throwing from his glove side he closed off with his jab step and limited his arm extension. Overall pop-to-pop time stayed in the 2.15-2.20 range. Arm strength improved to a respectable 72 MPH. Improved foot speed, agility and lateral actions behind the plate will go a long way in improving his game.

Hudson Valley Open (August 12, 2015)

Huffman is a solid 6 foot 185 pounds with broad shoulders and thick legs who ran an 8.86 60 with a 5.50 Home to 1B.  Offensively- Andrew hits from a balance position with a slight upper body lean over the plate and bat just off his shoulder at 30 degrees. Uses a small load and picks front foot up slightly for timing. Stays back behind the ball well. Could benefit from additional back foot/rotation to help clear a path into contact. Extension finishes around the body into foul territory (3B side) as hands were at times tied up at contact. Some power potential here. Exit Velocity was 78 MPH.  Defensively- On a day where the catching stood out, Andrew was right in the mix showing efficient footwork both from glove side and throwing side. Throws were online with good carry as his pop times were in the 2.10-2.21 range. There is no reason why Andrew won't be a sub 2.1 pop guy with arm strength improvements and staying lower coming out of the chute. Positional Velocity was 70 MPH. Fundamental with his blocking and receiving. Projects well behind the plate but also may want to consider a corner INF position to help marketability.
