6-foot-2, 171-pounds with lanky, projectable frame. The young righty sat in the low 80's with his fastball, but we have seen him up into the mid 80's consistently. With long, loose arm action and a delivery that requires little effort, it is easy to see the reasons why he is already picking up offers and interest from college programs. His breaking ball showed tight 11/5 break at 68-69 mph. The real separator for Vance comes with his changeup. He shows excellent feel and sells the arm action on a low 70's changeup that has good fading action. And, adding to his arsenal, the righty broke out a new split-finger fastball that showed good tumble at 65-66 mph. Vance is one of the top pitching prospects in Ohio for the Class of 2016, so in a few years, it may not be worth much to read about his potential as a position player. Nonetheless, the 6-foot-2, 171-pound prospect also shows potential as a position player. At the plate, he starts from a closed stance and uses a minimal stride to trigger his lower half. He created solid contact with some pull tendencies in his swing. His power will only continue to get better as his long frame fills out. Vance will only improve as he simplifies his load and gets rid of the occasional baring action that takes place. In the field, he shows natural, fluid actions. He covers ground well to both his glove side and backhand. He plays on his toes, shows good reactions, and creates a quick transfer to get ride of the baseball.
6/4/13
6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect with long, lanky frame that projects best as a pitcher at this stage. Shows quick arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot with long arm action. Delivery is clean and requires little effort. Shows good feel for three pitches. Fastball sat 81-83 mph with good arm side run. His curveball sat 68-70 mph with late, 11/5 break. His changeup shows similar run to his fastball at 69-70 mph but he has a tendency to slow down his arm action. In the field, he projects best as a corner infielder. Uses short arm action (78 mph). Needs to keep improving glove work and footwork at this stage. At the plate, he shows length in his swing from both sides. Tendency to get long and create bat drag as bat wraps in his load and hands get away from his body.
2/18/13
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect shows advanced skills his for his age. On the mound, the righty shows quick arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball shows good run at 81-84 mph. He shows excellent command of a late breaking 66-67 mph curveball. His best pitch may be a 68-69 mph changeup that shows excellent sink. At present, he likely projects as a pitcher at the next level, but the switch-hitting corner infielder shows nearly equal potential as a position player. He shows soft hands and receives the ball well at third base. He needs to continuing improving his footwork and playing through the baseball. He reached a top velocity of 83 mph across the infield using short arm action. At the plate, he shows more quickness in his hands (83 mph exit velocity) and power. From the left side, he shows room for improvement with a choppy rhythm to his swing. From both sides, he uses rotational mechanics.
