7/22/20
Hit: Physical bat from the right side. DOesn't get cheated up there. Rotational sequence that has backspun makes and hook/flare misses. Some of the louder jump we had in the group. Power: Gap abilities. Physical dude with above average bat speed. Offensive Projection: Middle of lineup. Max BP Exit Velocity: 76mph. Max BP Distance: 249 ft. Field: Corner skill set in the infield. Fluid actions with the frame for the position. Throw: More than enough strength for 1B. Defensive Projection: 1B.
2/3/19 Position
Body Type: 6-foot-2 200-pound prospect.
Swing Mechanics: Starts in a narrow, open stance. Uses a front hip hinge for his load. Showed a mostly on plane bat path with a line drive approach.
Hit: Good bat to ball ability.
Power: 81 mph exit velocity.
Offensive Projection: Shows a projectable frame with a swing that should grow and improve as he gets stronger and more in control of his movements. Would at least project as a gap to gap guy as he develops and matures.
Field: At 1B he showed adequate feel around the bag with solid footwork.
Throw: 66 mph across the diamond.
Run: 7.73 60 yard dash.
Defensive Projection: Shows enough to be a potential 1B at the next level.
2/4/18 6-foot-1, 205 pound first basemen has a big physical build that showed a good glove that fielded each attempt with no mistakes. Varney’s footwork can improve with quickness which would allow him to get off the bag quicker and get into a better fielding position. Had an 53 mph throwing velocity across the diamond which will improve as he has plenty of time left to develop. Offensively he swings right-handed from a wider stance with an uphill bat path. He had a little lift in his swing at couple times right as his bat entered the zone. Just need to remain more consistent to yield better contact. Overall still hit several hard showing good contact ability.
