Hit: (RHH) Started in an athletic stance with a compact load, then used a long stride. Explosive bat speed. Good extension on his finish, simple swing. Gap to gap approach.
Power: 96 mph exit velocity, average 90.51 mph. 62.38 mph bat speed average. 21.65 mph hand speed average. 2nd highest at the event.
Defense: (C) 2.12-2.15 pop times. Sure soft hands, rhythmic footwork, quick clean exchange. Projectable. Calm setup with some flexibility.
6-foot, 205-pound catcher, Johnston was an attendee of the New Year Open. Behind the plate, he displays looseness in his hips, clean footwork, and advanced arm strength, working up to 80 out of the crouch. From the right side of the plate, it's a strong foundation, it's an aggressive swing, where he works direct to the baseball and looks to elevate the ball. He has been up to 92 at the exit velocity station, and it translates to power with his swing characteristics. Johnston is a physical catcher to keep close tabs on going forward.

Johnston, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound infielder in the Ontario Terriers organization was an attendee of our Future Game Trials. In the infield, he displayed decent movements side-to-side, and once he gets to the ball he showed the ability to collect and let off strong and accurate throws up to 81 mph. At the plate, he has a strong base, a controlled load, and drives with a short, compact swing. With current strength, there is raw power, and when he gets out front, the ball jumps off his bat. At times he relies on his strength too much and gets locked up with his hands as he is late rotating, but overall, he is sound mechanically. The bat plays and he has one of the stronger offensive profiles in the 2022 class.
