10/28/18 - 6-foot-2, 190-pound Duke commit. Smith has been up to 90 mph during the course of the summer, but sat 84-88 on this date at the end of the fall. His delivery is controlled and repeatable with a quick arm stroke out of a 3/4 arm slot. Smith's changeup at 75-77 is thrown with good sell and showed some sink and arm-side run. His slider has sweeping action at 75-77 while his curveball at 70-74 showed 11/5 rotation and some two-plane action.
6/17/17 - Smith has a thicker pitcher’s frame at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds, and came out pumping fastballs 86-89 that sounded different as they sped through the zone. Smith gains momentum through his delivery before dropping and driving down the mound. He shows effort in his delivery with a head whack out front, and does not appear to be a fun at-bat for hitters. While warming up, Smith showed a sharper 80-81, tight slider, but it was more 74-76 during the game. He also flashed what appeared to be a curveball at 69-71. Some of the pitchers were having some trouble with the ball on a wet day, so Smith may have pulled back some on the pitch to get more feel. He also flashed a 78 mph changeup. Smith shows advanced arm strength, and the ball jumps out of his hand.
4/18/17 6-foot-1, 180-pounder with loose arm and arm speed out front. Good stack over rubber into slightly crossfire landing and pitches out of a three-quarter slot. Delivery has a significant amount of effort and some recoil. Fastball sat 83-86 with occasional natural cut. Threw two distinct breaking balls, a slurvy curveball at 68-69 that he would cast on occasion, and a slider at 72-75 that was sharper with more depth.
5/24/16 - Saw in one-inning relief appearance. Solid 6-foot-1, 170-pound build. Pitches out of a high three-quarter slot with violence and intent. Loose, quick arm and ball comes out of hand well. Some spin around front leg leads to yanking ball gloveside, but FB sat 82-84 and touched 85. Flipped in one CB at 65-mph during the short stint and showed a CH at 77-mph during warm-ups.
