6/26/19

Van Poppel is a big-bodied 6-foot-2, 190-pounds, very physical presence on the mound. Gets on top of the ball well with high 3/4 slot, deep shoulder tilt, solid on the front side. Fastball showed great tilt, ranging 82-85 mph, up to 86 mph. Shows curveball at 69-70 mph with larger break, and changeup was 79-80.

1.21.19
Creates great downhill plane on his his pitches with his 6-2 height. With both the natural leverage as well as shoulder tilt late in his delivery, Van Poppel’s 80-83 mph fastball, which he can located well to both sides of the plate, has a much higher perception, and he showed occasional late life to the arm side. He throws a curveball at 66-68 for strikes and big bend. His changeup, a 74-76 mph offering, mimics his fastball in action and deception, putting emphasis low in the zone.

7.17.18
Van Poppel has a strong, durable frame at 6-foot-2, 190-pounds with broad shoulders. Working from a high slot, the right-hander pounded strikes for the duration of his outing with a tall-and-fall, directional delivery, and athletic finish. Creates good angle on his fastball to both sides of the plate at 80-83 mph, mixing in a plus changeup that he throws with fastball arm speed at 74 mph. Threw his curveball for strikes with deep break and 12/6 shape at 67 mph.

6.05.18
Projectable frame with a high waist and long arms, standing 6-foot-2, 190-pounds, with room to continue packing on lean muscle. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a clean, quick arm stroke. Smooth, tall-and-fall delivery that he repeats well, allowing him to command three pitches for strikes. Outstanding body language and business-like presence on the mound. His command of fastball and changeup was excellent, working the ball down in the zone to both sides of the plate.  His fastball has late life, and heavy action from 80-82, changeup had depth and arm side fade at 76 mph. Curveball flashes good depth with 12/6 rotation at 66-68. With Van Poppel’s frame, repeatable delivery, and ability to command three pitches, look for him to climb up recruiting boards as he continues to develop.
