VA/DC Scout Blog

Shepard has a strong physically mature frame, but he is not bulky and can still add strength to it. Defensively he looks like he can stick behind the plate, quiet soft hands receiving and sticks the ball firmly. Gets low in his crouch and presents a good strike, stole some strikes during this game. Exchange is clean and he throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action. Arm has some strength already and should continue to add as develops. Between inning pops were 2.12-2.15. Threw one in-game pop that was a 2.34, but he held the ball to get a borderline strike call before throwing. This was actually impressive and showed his feel for the game as the pitch was on a 2-0 count and he made sure to get the strike call and make it 2-1 where it would have likely been 3-0 if he had popped up to throw right away. Overall, very good game awareness, seemed to have an advanced understanding of the little things going on around him, also showed leadership and clearly has intangibles present to go with skill.

At the plate, the bat is fast and he is strong at contact. Loads down and back so he has a slightly longer path but makes up for it with quick hands, level to contact point and uphill through it with extension. Creates loft in his swing without extreme launch angle, showed a pull preference and has power already present to pull side, has a chance to hit for power to all fields. In his first two at-bats he chopped grounders into the 5.5 hole and beat both out for infield singles, running a 4.38 and 4.34 on them. The third at-bat was a sacrifice fly to medium deep center, and the final at-bat was a blistered double down the leftfield line that one-hopped the fence. His top end speed is average, but he is quick out of the box and can go first to third or score from second. Tools are in place for him to be an impact bat and strong defender behind the plate at the next level.
