Irby is the highest ranked uncommitted 2024 and for good reason. Athletic swing from the left side of the plate with nice feel for the barrel. Walks away from the hands creating separation, above average hand speed, and balance throughout. This was his first varsity game and I was interested to see how he would handle that setting. In his first at bat he pulled the hands in on a fastball that got on him and muscled it through the right side for a single. In his third at bat he faced a sidearm right hander that most Cox hitters had been struggling with, but Irby squared up a line drive right at the right fielder. Definite name to know in the 2024 class.
2/22/20
Preseason All-State III
Irby is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a slightly open wide athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short and quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing, quick bat, exit velocity was 79. In the infield, rounds the ball and fields with a wider base and above average hands, clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 82. Showed versatility taking balls in the outfield where his velocity was 79. On the mound, he throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short loose quick arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are slightly uphill and on line, lands square with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 76-78, with some late run to armside. Curveball had good armspeed and was 64-69 with hard 11/5 break. Change-up had some armspeed and was 70-71 with sink.
