First Colonial
Classification: VHSL 5A / Region A 2022 Record: 18-2-1
The First Colonial Patriots lost a lot of innings, offensive production, and leadership from the 2022 team. While FC may take a small step back, I would not be surprised to see them in the hunt and sneak up on someone in late May. The Patriots always have arms to throw at teams and will keep games close. David Fall (Virginia Wesleyan) should be an arm that brings experience and ability to get deep into games. A potential arm to know is sophomore Nic Morlang. If they can score some runs then look for the Patriots to compete for a region title once again.
Key Returners:
COX
Classification: VHSL 4A / Region A 2022 Record: 14-8
Easy to see the intrigue with this year's Cox team. The Falcon Boys should have their horse back on the mound. Michael Irby (ECU) ended up being their go to arm during their state title run in 2021 and if he is healthy in 2023, they will be a tough out. Another arm to know about is uncommitted junior, Jake Colucci. New addition Macaddin Dye (Liberty) should factor in somewhere, as well as key returners Joseph Munitz (Lynchburg) and Austin Irby (ECU). Riley DeCandido (Maryland) has the potential to produce in the middle of the order and Michael Irby can provide some run support as well. Look for the Falcons to be playing in early June.
Key Returners:
HICKORY
Classification: VHSL 4A / Region A 2022 Record: 14-9 *Lost in state quarters*
Hickory was one of the surprises in 2022, but it should come as no surprise. The Hawks have long been an experienced powerhouse in Chesapeake, but it was the youth movement last year that gave the Hawks a spark. '25 Brayden Bachman (ECU), as a freshman, was one of the best hitters in the 757. Jacob Chadwell could be a frontline arm for the Hawks in 2023. The Hawks return Bridgewater commit Ashton Smith, Austin Jones, and Mateusz Puszczalo, all of whom should have bigger roles in '23. Sophomore George Washington commit Ryan Barks could gain some experience on the varsity level as well. Overall, they have the offense to give their staff run support, but will the arms hold opposing offenses down enough versus the better arms/teams that they will face.
Key Returners:
PRINCESS ANNE
Classification: VHSL 5A 2022 Record: 9-11
Princess Anne returns Christian Francis and Trevor Margetak, both of whom were second team all-region. Along with juniors Francis and Margetak, senior Wes Clevenger should be a big part of the Cavaliers' upcoming season. A few young names to know are sophomores Xavier Doon and Walt Clevenger, as well as freshman Aidan McKeating. The Cavs have a fair amount of players returning in 2023 and should benefit from that experience.
