Compact athletic frame for the middle infielder. Batted leadoff for Centreville and handled himself really well at the plate. Wider square stance, simple step to stride, and hands make small load back. Gets on plane with a level path swing, sees the ball up in the zone, and has nice barrel awareness. Worked a seven pitch at bat versus Eldridge early, seeing 92-94 and not backing away from it. Next at bat he got a fastball up and singled through the left side. In his third at bat he walked. His fourth at bat he got a 85 mph fastball elevated for his first pitch and barreled it up to deep center. Defensively he is a solid defender with average arm strength across. Long term it is probably second base, but the offense has a chance to separate him.
VA/DC State Games
Colella is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. He is a switch hitter, from the left side, he hits from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, short smooth load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, uphill swing path, gets some extension through the ball, showed a pull approach with the ability to work gap to gap, some extra base power present. From the right side, he hits from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, uphill line drive swing path, some strength at contact point with some extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap. Best exit velocity was 85. In the infield, rounds ball and fields with a wider base and soft hands. Works through the ball to a clean echange, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, infield velocity was 70. Ran a 7.19 60 yard dash.
