VA/DC Scout Blog 3/29/16
Richards looked like his normal self on the day. Athletic frame, throwing from a lower three-quarters arm slot. Normal effort to his delivery. His fastball was 77-80 on the day. His Curveball was 67-68 and change-up 70-72. He clearly didn't have his best stuff on the day and was fighting his command and a tough strike zone. He did a good job of battling and finding ways to get hitters out and keep his team in the game, allowing 2 runs, at least one unearned, in almost five innings of work. We have seen Richards pitch when he has his best stuff and his pitchability is off the charts. On this day he didn't have his best stuff and showed he can compete and still deliver a solid outing when that happens.
Preseason All-State 2/17/18
Richards is 6-0 and has an athletic frame with some projection left to it. Has a drop and drive delivery and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action and normal effort. Shoulders are uphill and on line, lands square with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 81-83 with some plane and late run to the armside. Curveball was 69-70 with sharp 1/7 break and good armspeed. Change-up was 71-73 with heavy fade and good armspeed.
3.28.17: Richards has a lankier athletic frame, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot. Shorter, free arm action, normal effort. Shoulders closed and uphill, square landing with athletic finish. Fastball had good angle and some sink, sat 76-79, held velocity for six innings. Change-up has fade and good armspeed, 71-72. 2/8 curveball with late, tight break and good armspeed, running 67-70. Good feel for his pitches and high pitchability. Threw six innings, picked up nine strikeouts against just one walk in his last inning of work. At plate, hits from right side and has a short swing with some batspeed, tripled to right off of 90 MPH fastball.
4.2.16:  Richards has an athletic frame, a drop and drive delivery, and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a long, loose, quick arm action that generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are closed and uphill and he lands square with a slight fall off and recoil. His fastball had late run, sitting 74-75, and was commanded to both sides of the plate. His changeup had fade with good armspeed, running 70. His curveball had gradual 1/7 action, running 62-64, and showed the potential to be good as he tightens it up. Richards showed a lot of mental toughness and competitiveness, not getting phased by anything that went on around him and constantly attacking a very good lineup. He showed no fear of going inside with his fastball.
10.12.15 Richards is a lanky lefty who throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. He has a long, loose arm action and a quick arm that works. His shoulders are closed and uphill and he creates good angle and deception with a slightly closed landing. Richards’ fastball ran 72-73 and he hides it well. His breaking ball has sharp 1/7 action and ran 62. The pitch has a lot of potential as he gets stronger and tightens the spin on it. His changeup is straight and has good armspeed, running 66. He pounds the zone and is a heck of a competitor, shutting down a good Stars White team in the Columbus Day Classic Championship Game. In the outfield, he gets good reads on the ball and has a strong arm.
