Schmitt featured one of the easiest arms on the day. The 6-foot-2, 165-pound, high-ceiling right-hander cruised through his bullpen, seemingly playing a game of catch with his fastball sitting in the low-80s. It wasn’t until his final couple fastballs where he truly showed the untapped velocity he possesses. His last three fastballs sat 85-plus mph, with his top coming in at 86.4 – up from an 81 high reached this past October. The loose-levered, easy-armed 2022 should continue to see his velocity spike over the coming years as he continues to fill out his frame.
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 6-1, 155-pounds. Thin, lanky levers with broad shoulders; projects well.
Delivery: Upright start from the middle of the rubber; simple side step to high knee balance point, level shoulders. Strides with short extension, slightly closed landing with toe open. Shorter extension creates some noticeable separation in hip and shoulder. Low-effort involved, easy landing, balanced finish.
Arm Action: RH. Clean, compact arm action to a high 3/4 slot. Again, low, easy effort.
FB: T81, 79-80 mph. Natural arm-side action; flashed carry, late break at times.
CB: 65-66 mph. Above-average feel for spin; slight deceleration. Features depth with some sharp action off an 11/5 plane; averaged -15.1 inches of vertical break and -16.7 horizontally. Average spin rate of 2,157 rpm.
CH: 70-73 mph. Slight deceleration but the pitch projects; consistent arm-side run/fade.
Hit: RH. Athletic, balanced stance, pigeon-toed base; hands set low, slightly away from body. Smooth weight-shift load back, small stride stays even. Short, concise bat path to the zone, level through it. Above-average hand speed. Repeats up-the-middle contact well.
Power: 79 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. OF - 83 mph. Long, loose arm action from a high 3/4 slot.
Defense: Fluid approach, gathers low to the ground with two hands; works into small crowhop, plays through the ball with some efficiency.
Run: 7.59 runner in the 60. Efficient gait; above-average runner for size.
