In a recent move to catcher, 2023 prospect C/INF Vidal Colon (University School of Milwaukee) just elevated his profile to a whole new level. His bat has always outweighed his defensive capabilities on the infield, but our first look at him defensively behind the plate might change some minds on that. His body type fits the position well at a strong and compact 5-foot-10, 198-pounds and all of previous infield experience translates well also. He’s clearly an above average athlete and moved better than most backstops we’ve seen this winter. His arm strength also carried over at 80 mph out of the crouch resulting in event best pop times of 1.87-1.94. If this is a permanent switch for Colon there’s no doubt he’ll continue to improve with reps.

Few sophomores left the MOSH Center having done as much for their prospect stock as Colom did. The compact 5-foot-9, 180-pound athlete creates premium bat speed, measured at 76.3 mph on average, with an innate feel for the barrel that repeated hard-hit line-drive contact into his pull-side gap. He can drive the ball hard and far, especially for his size, as he recorded one batted-ball at a 92.9 mph exit speed that travelled 355 feet. Defensively, Colon’s arm has ticked up significantly since our last live look in July. His on-target 90 mph high across the infield tied for the hardest throw of the day, and he ran a 6.99 earlier in the workout. His athleticism paired up with above-average foot speed allow him to cover ground laterally, and his up-the-middle actions have improved, too.

Positional Profile: SS/3B Body: 5-8, 175-pounds. A sturdy, compact athlete. Hit: RHH. Balanced/open setup with pre-pitch rhythm; confident approach. Controlled, leg hang/kick to closed stride, bat-head gets vertical in load, creates good separation. Above-average bat and hand speed, consistent pull-side approach produces low-lying line-drives. Power: 84 mph exit velocity from the tee. Arm: RH. INF - 82 mph. A longer arm swing at draw, loose, can throw from multiple slots, favors a lower one; his top throw across was also an event high. Defense: Defends in a rhythm, with confidence. Bounces on the balls of his feet, arriving at the ball dynamically, fluid footwork. Low at gather, quick funnels through exchange. Run: 7.01 runner in the 60.
6/18/20
Among the most productive players of the tournament; listed at 5-foot-8, 165 pounds, lean/strong athlete. A position player first, Colon also started on Friday against ProPlayer Canes and turned in a solid outing. He sat 77-79 mph, touching 80, and holding it late into his outing. Colon continuously went to his slider and was comfortable throwing it as both an outpitch and early in counts. Offensively, Colon tallied eight hits in Halos’ four games (all singles) from a compact right-handed bat, creates bat speed, pull-side approach; natural feel to hit, timely barrels. Also a savvy defender; natural, quick actions with athleticism involved constantly. Might project best at third base long-term, but he’s an asset on the left side. An emerging ‘23 prospect to know in Wisconsin.

Straight type; inconsistent feel to locate right now. CB: 62-63 mph. 11/5 shape with depth; above-average action for age. CH: 69-72 mph. Straight change thrown mostly at arm speed.

Above average arm strength, long path over the top slot. Defense: Actions showed ability to play through the baseball, clean exchange, playable hands. Run: 7.04 runner in the 60.
