Alberta Fall Open - Session 1: Quick Hits

On Thursday, September 21st, the PBR Alberta staff travelled into Calgary to host the first of two Alberta Fall Open ID at Optimist Athletic Park in Calgary, Alberta. This event featured 30+ players in the 2024 - 2027 classes and allowed our staff an opportunity to get an in-depth look at the players, as well as collect updated metrics via our tech partners TrackMan and Swift Performance.
Earlier this week, we broke down the top measurable data performers from the event with our Statistical Analysis, Pitching Data Dive and Positional Data Dive. Now, we conclude our post-event coverage with our Quick Hits article, providing scouting notes and video on five standouts from the event.

Cas Herold C / OF / Ernest Manning, AB / 2025An Okotoks Dawgs Academy product, Harold performed well at the Alberta Fall Open ID. With an imposing 6-foot-1 190-pound frame, he really stood out behind the dish. He had a top pop time of 2.16, and a max velocity of 71 mph showing a smooth transition on his throws to second. However, it was at the plate where he really shined, elevating and hitting the ball hard to all fields. His ability to control the barrel, combined with a smooth lefty swing that kept the barrel in the zone allowed him to hit it hard up the middle reaching a 93.6 mph exit velocity. He impressed in his offensive improvement from the spring and will be intriguing to watch after an off-season of development.

Tyler Bonin RHP / 3B / Beaumont Composite High School, AB / 2025Bonin, the 6-foot-1 170Ibs two-way player, had one of the more impressive bullpens at the Alberta Fall Open ID. Athletic look on the mound with a quick arm out a high ¾ slot. Possesses a 4 pitch mix and showed the ability to locate them all for strikes. The fastball sat 80-82 mph while the sinker was 78-79 mph with arm-side-run. The curveball profiles more as a slider as it has horizontal break to it, coming in at 67-69 mph. At the dish, the RHH consistently elevated to all parts of the field. Bonin will be an intriguing follow as we head into the offseason.

Zayden Gukert RHP / 2B / National Sport School, AB / 2024The 2024 Webber Academy product stood out on both sides of the ball at the Fall Open. The 6-foot-1, 170Ibs RHP sat 79-80 mph with the fastball generating 2100+ rpm. Out of an over-the-top arm slot, Gukert generated plenty of depth and vertical break and the curveball when down in the zone, spinning it at 2200+ rpm at 68-69 mph. At the dish, he uses quiet hands and bat speed to reach a max exit velocity of 89.7 mph. Consistently elevated back up the middle throughout his entire round.

Ray Han OF / RHP / Henry Wisewood, AB / 2026Despite being one of the younger players at the event, Han impressed in several facets of his game. He ran the second fastest 60 of 7.01, and had one of the better OF velocities on the day of 80 mph. At the dish, he has a simple load and is short to the ball maintaining balance throughout his swing. Worked on a line to his pull-side with consistent exit velocities in the 80 mph range. Han will be an intriguing follow as he continues to grow and add strength.

Santiago Rodriguez OF / RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2026

Rodriguez showed us why he is one the more intriguing 2026s in the province. On the mound, his ability to spin the ball really stood out, and that will only improve with more velocity. His fastball, which sat 83-85 mph, he’s able to generate 2300+ rpm. Creates arm-side-run on it out of a ¾ slot. He has two breaking balls which both profile differently on a horizontal plane. Both the slider and curveball spin at 2150+ rpm. At the plate, Rodriguez elevated the ball with authority, using the entire field. He also had the top OF velocity on the day hitting 84 mph. The young two-way player will be someone to follow going forward.
