Future Games - Team Canada Quick Hits II
August 1, 2023
As the calendar prepares to flip to August, another PBR Future Games at LakePoint Sports in Emerson, Georgia is now behind us. Canada headed down with a 22-man roster with 12 from Ontario, five from BC, four from Alberta and one from Quebec.
The team took the field for a trio of games, along with a showcase, with all of them being in front of a plethora of college coaches with 375 of them at the complex throughout the week.
With just three Future Games eligible players across the country already committed, it was a strong team at all positions and we begin to break it all down below with our second set of Quick Hits, providing scouting notes and video on standouts from the event.

FUTURE GAMES - TEAM CANADA QUICK HITS II
Timothy Piasentin SS / 3B / Dr. Charles Best, BC / 2025Rankings StateRank: 14 / POS: 3
There’s lots to dream on with the frame and bat with Piasentin. The Coquitlam Reds product looks the part in the box with a short, quick left-handed swing with consistent, easy lift on contact. He didn't have any hits today, but he turned on an inside pitch for hard contact to his pull-side. In the workout portion of the event yesterday, he drove multiple balls deep to his pull-side with a max EV of 95 mph. Piasentin will continue to be a good follow at the plate in the next two games here in Georgia.

William Labonte RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2026Despite being one of the younger arms on the roster, Labonte impressed with his ability to find the zone with his 3 pitch mix and create in-zone swing & miss while doing so. The athletic, fluid mover with long arm action got up to 89.8 mph and sat 87-88 mph throughout his outing. Flashed a cutter at 85-86 mph which did an efficient job of inducing weak contact. Labonte also showed off a high spin curveball, 2650+ rpms, which out of a low ¾ slot had lots of horizontal break with some depth to it as well. It has the makings to become a very effective pitch as he continues to refine it. Will be an important and talented arm to follow going forward.

Ben Goodacre RHP / Ancaster, ON / 2025Rankings StateRank: 3 / POS: 1
‘25 RHP Ben Goodacre (Fieldhouse Pirates) got the start in Game One for Canada and worked a pair of innings. 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame with strength to come and works with an up-tempo delivery. Ran into some trouble in his first inning of work but settled in nicely during the second as he was generating swings/misses with the fastball up in the zone. Fastball sat 85-88mph (2450+), along with a curveball at 73-74mph with depth and changeup at 73mph. More of a fastball/curveball combination right now and his strike-throwing abilities should continue to improve as he develops mechanically on the mound. One of the more intriguing 2025 arms in Ontario and has impressed all year long.

Josiah Romeo SS / RHP / Mayfield Secondary School, ON / 2025Romeo was the main attraction among Canadian arms and had LakePoint buzzing during his three innings against New York on Saturday. The fastball sat 90-92mph early on before settling in at 88-90mph. The heavy FB pairs well with the SL 76-80mph and he does a good job tunneling the two. Generated several whiffs during three strong innings. Big-time arm that showed that flashed big-time stuff in front of a large crop of college coaches. Romeo also swung the bat throughout the week where there's also upside but the mound where will be where he makes his money.

Robert Scalzo RHP / Lambrick Park, BC / 2025Rankings StateRank: 2 / POS: 1
6-foot-1, 200-pound right-hander with a three-pitch mix. It’s a high-spin fastball at 85-88 T89 and was working the edges of the plate with it. Also showed feel for both his secondary offerings (CB/CH) and kept hitters guessing at the plate with the ability to land them for strikes. Worked two strong innings and the velocity continues to trend upwards for the BC native. Scalzo has really jumped onto the scene over the past year and has shown well on several big stages.
|
Alex Uher RHP / USS, ON / 2025Rankings StateRank: 10 / POS: 3
Uher has proven to be one of the most efficient 2025 arms in Ontario this summer and flashed that at the Future Games. Smaller stature on the mound at 5-9, 170lbs with a quick arm and strike-throwing abilities. The fastball sat 87-90mph and he pairs it with a slider at 78-79, with both pitches playing well off each other. It was a quality two-innings from Uher and he wasn't fazed under the bright lights. The development of the changeup will be something to watch going forward and could help elevate his stock in a starters role.

Adyn Schell 3B / RHP / Martingrove CI , ON / 2026Rankings StateRank: 3 / POS: 1
Schell was the only player to play a position and also pitch, flashing equal upside in both areas.Size and strength at 6-4, 200lbs and swings it well from the left-side with bat speed. Flashed his strength during both rounds of BP 93.8mph exit velocity (87.0 avg) and peak distance of 350ft. The right-handed pitcher worked one inning and there was plenty to like, sitting 84-88mph and generating in-zone whiffs on the slider at 73-76mph (2400+). Also flashed a changeup 79-80mph. With plenty to like on both sides of his game, it will be interesting to see which makes the first big jump.
|
Lucas St-Laurent RHP / 2B / Ecole Okotoks, AB / 2026St-Laurent impressed as one of the younger players on Canada’s roster. A loose, quick arm with a low release height generates deception on fastballs up in the zone as it creates a flat VAA, making it difficult on hitters to square up and inducing swing & miss. His fastball got up to 87 mph, sitting in the 84-86 mph range and has plenty of arm side run. The curveball and slider both have unique movement patterns which compliment his fastball well and sets up his changeup effectively, as it has depth and could turn into an effective out pitch. One of the top 2026 arms in the country has continued to be a standout no matter where he pitches.

Joey Marino SS / 2B / Fleetwood Secondary , BC / 2025Rankings StateRank: 1 / POS: 1
Marino is a quality defender up the middle with the ability to handle the corner, as well. Wide and balanced setup from the right-side with a bat path that allows him to hit the ball hard to all fields. Came through on Friday night with a loud double to the backside gap. BC's top-ranked 2025 prospect.
