East Alabama Classic Notebook: Day 3

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The East Alabama Classic is an annual event that occurs in the Auburn, Opelika, & Phenix City area each year in Alabama. Teams from around Mobile, Birmingham, Huntsville, and other areas travel down to the eastern part of Alabama to play against each other. These games are always high intense, talent-filled, and fun to watch for any spectator. This year, the host sites are Auburn High School, Opelika High School, Smiths Station High School, Central Phenix City High School and Russell County High School.

With excellent venues like these, it makes for great baseball in the eastern part of the state. This year, that was the case again. This event always draws some of the top teams and players in Alabama. This year’s participants were:

Saturday Standouts

+ SS Cam Warren (2024) jumped out to us immediately at the PBR at The Hank and Preseason All-State events,, and all signs point to Warren having already improved over those few months. We had seen how impressive the freshman was during BP, defensive workout, etc., but hadn’t seen him much in gameplay. Hitting in the 5-hole for the talented Spartans, Warren did more than hold his own, he led the way offensively. Reaching on all four plate appearances, Warren singled three times and got hit-by-pitch in his last at-bat. Showed the ability to hit the ball where it is pitched, with all three base hits being in different spots of the field. Slotted in the designated hitter role, Warren flashes some ability with the glove on the infield at showcases, but didn’t get to see it here. Excellent day here for the freshman.

SS Cam Warren (3/13/21)

+ C Brooks Bryan (2022, Troy) has always been able to swing the bat from the left side, but it seems he’s made some notable strides in terms of added muscle, flexibility, etc. I’ve seen him a few times this spring season already, and he’s done a good job behind the plate. He’s got a really strong arm on throws to 2nd base, and he’s only going to get better from here. Today from the designated hitter role, Bryan showed he still has no trouble handling the bat. He recorded two hits, one being a double to left field. At a durable 6-2, 215, Bryan has got significant strength in the lower-half with strong & quick hands at the plate. Shown tons of power of the years and continues to impress here.

C Brooks Bryan (3/13/21)

+ RHP Keaton Fuller (2021, Troy) got the start yesterday for the Pirates against a 7A Spain Park squad that had been swinging it well over the past few games. His start, however, did not get off to a great start in the first. He allowed four runs in the inning, while only one of those was earned. He struggled just a bit with command, missing to the arm side with the fastball, but soon locked in for the duration of the outing. Pumping 86-87, 89 in the first few innings, before settling into 85-86 mph in the later innings. His ball creates some run into right-handed hitters, jamming multiple hitters and inducing weak contact. His last pitch of the game was 87 mph. Coupled the fastball with a hard breaking ball at 76-77 mph with serious bite and present swing and miss capability. Live arm with a wiry, athletic 5-11, 160 pound frame. Displayed some elite competitiveness pitching out of trouble and going the distance (7 IP), striking out five in the process.

RHP Keaton Fuller (3/13/21)

+ RHP Trent Hodgdon (2021, West Virginia) was another senior arm that has signed with a Division ! program that was tasked with getting the start against 7A Spain Park. A former Future Gamer, I had seen Hodgdon up to 93 mph in his first start in February, but worked more 87-88, 89 mph (2250) with excellent command over all of his pitches. The separator for Hodgdon is his power, 11/5 breaking ball (2450) that he can locate for a strike in the zone, or bury it in the dirt with two strikes. He didn’t have as much swing and miss to his stuff than we usually see, but credit that to a gritty Jaguar lineup and Hodgdon for working quick and filling up the zone. He was credited with the win in 5 IP (mercy rule), 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K’s. Definitely the ace of the staff and when he’s on the mound, the Panthers will be in every game they play.

RHP Trent Hodgdon (3/13/21)

+ C Ellis Yohn (2021, UT-Martin) led the way offensively in a 14-1 mercy rule victory for the Panthers. Yohn put together a loud stat line hitting in the middle of the order, driving in five runs in the contest. In his second at-bat with the bases loaded, Yohn jumped on the first pitch he saw against a newly-entered reliever and smacked it over the LF wall for a grand slam. Up in his next at-bat, Yohn showed that he wasn’t done doing damage at the plate. The former Future Gamer caught an elevated fastball on the outer-half of the plate and sent a deep fly ball to right field that just kept carrying, and carrying, and carrying, until it was over the fence. Notching his second home run of the day, Yohn finished going 2-3, 2 HR’s & 5 RBI’s.

C Ellis Yohn (3/13/21)
