Updated 2022 Rankings: Full Breakdown

Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

The Updated and Expanded 2022 Player Rankings featured a major shakeup throughout the list, especially in the Top 10. After recently moving from Florida, we saw '22 SS/RHP Landon Russell (Russell County, Auburn recruit) take over the top spot after coming in at #2 in the last update. There are several other players that jumped up the list after strong summer showings. If you missed the release of the rankings, CLICK HERE to check them out.

The PBR staff got a great look this summer at the top talent that the 2022 class has to offer. Multiple players made some big statements at some elite events this summer. With all things considered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our staff was out in full force this summer scouting players in the safest way possible.

This update was expanded to 130 players across the state of Alabama, with some making their respective debuts on the list. Today, we want to go back and breakdown the list from notable risers, top uncommitted players still left in the class, and checking out which college programs have the most committed players.

Risers Outside the Top 10

Carter Stanford RHP / Spanish Fort, AL / 2022

Stanford just missed the Top 10 in the state, coming in at #11 and #485 nationally. Got our first look at the right-hander at last summer's Southeast Summer Championships at Hoover and showed off his live arm, running the fastball up to 87 mph but struggled a little with command. Stanford has seemed to solve those command issues, as he was a standout at the PBR Showdown this summer. Worked 87-90, 91 mph w/ occasional cut and was dominant on the bump. Slider shows hard, late break at 79-81 mph that got multiple swings & misses. Has gotten strongly is starting to fill out at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds. Committed to Alabama.

William Turner LHP / OF / Hartselle , AL / 2022

Turner made a significant stride in the recent update, jumping up to #19 in the state. Currently listed as the #3 ranked LHP on the list, Turner was a standout at the inaugural Trash Pandas Classic this June. 5-foot-11, 170 pound frame that was carving through hitters during gameplay at the event. Hitters got some uncomfortable swings off of him, as the fastball reached 83 mph with sink & run. Screams projection on the mound, and is still developing into his body. Breaking ball displayed some sharp bite to it and changeup had fade. Offspeed pitches played well off the fastball. Recently committed to Auburn.

Mason Swinney SS / RHP / Phil Campbell , AL / 2022

Swinney really popped onto our radar this spring when we saw him at a VBA 16U Black workout. Can swing it well from the right side of the plate, but the arm is very intriguing. Turned in a really impressive performance at the Future Games Trials, where he was up to 85 mph with solid command. There have also been some reports he has added some velocity over the summer. Quick arm with a live fastball with ride through the zone. Tight breaking ball with 11/5 action. Really bursted onto the scene this summer and earned himself the #18 spot in this update.

Colton Wood C / 2B / Faith Academy, AL / 2022

Wood was a top performer at this July's South Alabama Select event in Mobile, AL. Excels at multiple facets of the game and possesses a stocky 6-foot, 175 pound build. Primary backstop that looks the part. Put on a show during BP with lasers to the gaps and an EV of 92.71 mph. Premium defender behind the plate that handled all arms really well during the bullpen session. Can shut down running games with 1.85-1.90 pop times. Blocks well, and seems to be the complete package. Also a good runner (6.83 60 YD). QB1 for Faith Academy in the fall. Debuted at #25 in this update.

Ryan Storey OF / RHP / Helena, AL / 2022

Storey showcased some elite athletic ability when he attended the Top Prospect Games this summer, where he was a top performer on a loaded roster. Left-handed stick that is very polished at the plate with a mature approach. Peppered the middle of the field during BP and posted an EV at 91.22 mph via Trackman. Excellent runner that posted a 6.56 laser-timed 60 YD. Average arm strength in the outfield and covers a lot of ground in the outfield. Committed to South Alabama midway through the summer. Debuted at #27 in this update.

Evan Pope OF / RHP / Auburn , AL / 2022

Our PBR staff was very impressed with the two-way potential that Pope has after his performance at the Future Games Trials. Primary outfielder that handled the bat well all summer long, especially at the event this summer. Can't remember him not squaring up a baseball during his BP round. Short stroke with a slight uphill bat path that incorporates the lower-half well. On the mound, the fastball jumped up to 85 mph at the event with solid feel for all secondary pitches. Debuts at #28 in this update.

Reid Gongwer LHP / OF / Chelsea, AL / 2022

Gongwer was another arm that really made a big statement with his performance at the Top Prospect Games this summer. Just your prototypical left-handed arm that knows how to pitch and can throw any pitch in any count. Worked mainly 81-82 mph with more velo on the way and an average spin rate of 2427 RPM's. Feel for spin (2608 RPM avg spin rate) on the breaking ball that showed some sweeping action to it. Changeup had sink and played well off the fastball. Committed to South Alabama this summer. Up to #30 in the update.

Zane Stokes SS / 2B / Mobile Christian , AL / 2022

A Future Gamer on this year's squad, Stokes really jumped out and held his own against some heavy competition at the event. Seems to have a knack for finding the barrel and putting solid contact on the baseball. No wasted AB's during the event. Multiple base hits up the middle during gameplay. Excellent with the glove and is going to stick in the middle of the infield. Professional approach to the game. Will make a college coach very happy in the future. Huge leap to #36 in this update.

Ayden Amis SS / RHP / Andalusia , AL / 2022

Got a great look at Amis this summer at the East Coast Sox Scout Day and the Top Prospect Games where he really grabbed the attention of our PBR staff. 5-foot-9, 170 pounder that has more juice than you would think. An excellent feel for hitting with solid top-hand strength. Never seems to get fooled at the plate. Numbers don't really jump off the page compared to the other guys here, but this kid can play. Committed to Troy this summer. Debuts at #38 after a great summer.
