Prep Baseball Report

Senior Games: Infielder Analysis

Steve Doherty
SoCal Area Scout

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA - The inaugural Prep Baseball Report California Senior Games took place at JSerra High School and attracted close to 60 top uncommitted seniors from across the state. There was one committed pitcher, Jeremy Wiegman (Huntington Beach HS), that participated. Wiegman committed to Cal State San Marcos a couple days before the event and still came out. Thanks, Jeremy. Shortly after the event, within a matter of hours another player committed. This time it was Connor Brady who committed to Pt. Loma Nazarene.

We will continue to break down players evaluations, video, and our own scouting notes and post content around that.

But for now, let's take a look at the infielders from the California Senior Games. Click on each players profile for their full videos from the event. Players are listed in no particular order.

Scouting Report

11/10/18 - California Sr. Games. Five-foot-11, 165 pounds. Pt. Loma Nazarene commit. Medium, athletic frame that's expected to put on weight and muscle-mass as he matures. Picked up where he left off from the LA Open by displaying consistency with the bat and athleticism behind the plate. Approach was to the pull side during his batting practice rounds and exhibited some power. Currently he is a line-drive hitter.

10/20/18 - Los Angeles Open - Brady showed advanced actions behind the plate where his quiet, balanced setup allows him to get to pitches without giving away the location. Maintains weight evenly down the middle of his body. Shows excellent catch-and-throw with a clean exchange and a fluid release. Popped 1.96-2.01 range with his misses just slight up the second base line. Showed quick recovery skills on balls in the dirt. At the plate he showed a wide, open stance and above average bat speed that resulted in loud, hard contact throughout his round. Consistently squared balls up to the gaps on a line from a middle approach. Uses a high leg kick for timing and incorporates the lower half into the swing well. Body works in synchronicity. Swing is easy with projectable developing power on his five-foot-11, 165-pound frame.

Scouting Report

11/10/18 - California Sr. Games. Five-foot-10, 170 pounds. Strong, muscular frame all-around. Open stance, high hands set-up at with a pull approach. Exceptionally strong lower half. Currently has gap-to-gap power. Strong arm from the low ¾ slot which caused some inaccuracy on throws to first base. Consequently this bodes well for him as his secondary position is a pitcher, where he gets some run & tail on his fastball and sweep on his slider. Is a 3B that displays soft hands and a clean transfer and release.

2/24/18 - Uncommitted. 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame. Proportionally built, defined lower half with squared shoulders that projects to add mass to frame easily. Olvera did not play in the game we attended but did participate in pregame routine which was impressive and we felt his showing deserved some notes. Olvera shows above average arm strength with online throws that have carry to them. Always in the right position to both cut throws and to make throws after the cut. Very good feet around the bag and the athleticism to make up for bad throws with his body and glove. Attacked balls hit to him while under control and in position to come up throwing. Clean exchanges after funneling the ball out front.

Bailey has quick hands through the zone and is explosive at contact. He is strong and powerful and does an excellent job of keeping his hands inside the ball and flashes present bat speed. He keeps his barrel on plane through the hitting zone and gets extension after contact. Defensively Bailey has enough arm to play 3B but really projects as a power hitting 2B on the next level. His actions are smooth and his footwork fluid. Shows the ability to make throws from multiple angles with clean exchanges. Bailey clocked a 7.22 60 and registered a 79 mph infield velocity.

8/1/18 - Five-foot-8, 165-pounds, strong, muscular, defined lower half, squared shoulders with proportional strength. Strong hands, forearms. Capello shows athleticism on the dirt with fluid footwork, soft hands, and aggressiveness in attacking balls and playing through them. Understands the nuances of playing shortstop. At the plate he's short to the ball while showing a very quiet approach. Keeps head down on the ball and uses a leg kick trigger. Sprays ball to all fields on a line drive. Shows a gap-to-gap approach. On the mound he keeps everything down in the zone and flashes command of his three pitches. Uses a compact delivery from a high ¾ slot with regular effort. Fastball shows some arm side run and consistently on a downhill plane. Curveball has 11/5 shape and late break.

8/1/18 - Five-foot-8, 165-pounds, small, sturdy frame with defined musculature throughout particularly through the thighs. Compact arm action in the back with a hint of a cupped wrist through to a high ¾ arm slot. Arm is quick and loose. Deliberate delivery with a high leg lift before landing square to target in an athletic position with some recoil to the arm. Fastball has sinking action on a downhill plane showing the ability to spot it side-to-side. Curveball has tight spin with late sharp breaking action and 1/7 shape to it. Pitch projects to be above average. Cappello is also an above average middle infielder with the ability to make throws from multiple angles and shows a quiet approach with sneaky power at the plate.

7/19/18 @ NCTB Upperclass Tourney - Multiple reports from different scouts at the tourney: Can handle himself in the box as he looks relaxed and loose and makes solid contact every time. He has good on the bases speed and can take an extra base when he wants when he gets on. His defensive skills are solid. He could be a little smoother with his transitions, but overall he is a strong player with abilities to impact the game in multiple ways. /// Stocky ballplayer that always looks to compete. He has nice footwork and quick hands in the infield. Seems to want the ball hit to him and can take charge In the field. Strong arm throwing across the diamond with quick reactions. Can spray the ball all over the field. Has a quality eye and does a good job with pitch selection. Aggressive on the base path that can read balls in dirt. Also pitches that maxed out at 82 but sits 79-81 with a firm fast ball. Likes to work in and can work down in the zone. Change-up is a great set up pitch and uses it well in mid counts. Sits between 72-74. Also has a nice curve ball with late action. Sits 69-71 and can use it any time in the count. Works fast with a good tempo and has a solid pick off move.

Scouting Report

11/10/18 - California Sr. Games. Six-foot-1, 175 pounds. We saw Tyler in August at the Top Prospect Showcase where he impressed offensively and defensively. He picked up right where he left off & really showed plus arm tool & solid batting practice round. Appears to still be filling out his frame as he looks thicker than when we saw him in August. Defense continues to impress with quick hands, fluid footwork and excellent range. At the plate he's driving the ball to the gaps more consistently which bodes well for his future power.

8/1/18 - Cox is a 6-foot, 170-pound lean, wiry strong athlete with square shoulders and some present strength in the lower half. Scouting Report

11/10/18 - California Sr. Games. Six-foot-4, 175 pounds. Tall, skinny frame with plenty of room to pack on weight & muscle mass. We have seen Adrese on numerous occasions now and he keeps getting better. I see above average power in the bat. Defensively he moves well for his size and can turn the double paly and make a play on the run. His future may be on the mound, but an option option for a two-way player. He would be an excellent project and steal for some local program.

8/1/18 - Six-foot-4, 175-pounds, long, lean, wiry strong, long-limbed, high waist, large feet. Frame has plenty of room for added weight and mass. Azzani is a smooth fielding first baseman that plays lows and is aggressive to the ball. Shows athleticism and plays light on his feet around the bag. Arm is accurate and he shows the ability to make throws from multiple angles. The bat really projects for Azzani where he is strong and balanced throughout. Consistently squares balls up and shows over-the-fence power presently which should only improve as body develops more. Azzani shows fast hands and a consistent barrel path. Gets full extension after explosive contact. Azzani registered a 93 mph exit velocity off the tee giving an indication of his power potential once fully grown.

7/27/18 @ NCTB Underclass Tourney - Tall and slender and athletic frame. Long loose whip like arm action, high leg kick,  hit 80 mph and there is more that can be gotten out of that arm, particularly with more/better lower body usage. 65 mph CB. Good sink and arm side run on fastball. Pounded the zone well. Fields position well.

Scouting Report

11/10/18 - California Sr. Games. Five-foot-11, 185 pounds. Muscular build. Strong lower half. Big pop in the bat and it plays. Future corner INF or corner OF. Definitely tries to lift the ball, but has a feel for the barrel. Can play multiple positions given he moves well laterally and displays soft, quick hand with smooth transfers and accurate throws to first base. Will be fun to watch La Mirada this year.

Scouting Report

11/10/18 - California Sr. Games. Five-foot-9, 155 pounds. Small frame. This is the first time we have seen Aaron as a PBR event following multiple viewings during the spring season. Displays a narrow stance, high leg kick trigger with some burgeoning line drive abilities. Sprays balls to all fields while maintaining his barrel on a consistent plane. Very even keeled player - doesn't rattle easily both at the plate and in the field. Likely a future second baseman with the ability and athleticism to slide into a corner outfield position. Moves well laterally and charges balls under control. Makes good reads on balls off the bat. Has plenty of strength in the arm which is accurate to first base from a low ¾ slot. Average runner with above average instincts on the basepaths.

Scouting Report

11/10/18 - California Sr. Games. Six-foot-3, 190 pounds. We have now had multiple viewings of Brian. Bat always stands out. Big strong kid that is a future first base. Big power is the bat, coming from legs. The sooner he can get reps at first base the better he will get quicker. He moves well for his size and with a background in the INF, it should be a smooth transition.

7/17/18-7/19/18 @ NCTB Upperclass Tourney - Multiple reports from two different scouts at tourney: Showed one of the quickest bats of the day, used his lower half extremely well, displayed middle gap to gap approach and drove the ball to opposite gap with present power, projectable defensive tools and a strong arm on defense, talented player with pretty significant ceiling and tools that can and should continue to develop and emerge. /// Tall and lanky, strong arm, solid to above average range, can make all throws needed at 3B, made the routine plays routinely, possesses good bat speed and bat speed, quality at-bats vs some of the better pitching at the tourney. Good pop presently and a body type to keep adding size and strength. Stays short with a compact swing. Looks to be a candidate to be an early commit this fall.

6/1/18-6/3/18 @ BAWS 2018 - Long and strong body on well-porportioned 6-foot-2 185-pound frame. One of better performers at BAWS 2018 and looks like a 2019 3rd baseman to follow in the region. Balanced stance with flat bat through load; balanced swing as hands stay tight to body with consistent loud contact in bat; 93 Exit Velocity on ball back through the middle. Above average gap power with quickness in wrists/hands; drove ball over left fielders head in game and just missed another on a ball hit at the left fielder. Strong ability to recognize pitches while keeping hands back in load. Above average arm from shortstop with life across the diamond; bouts where ball would take off but showed ability to make special plays during games. Average runner showing better at full speed and longer gait underway; 4.56 H-1st.

Scouting Report

11/10/18 - California Sr. Games. Six-foot-4, 205 pounds. We have seen Michael now on multiple occasions. Athletic kid for his size and I believe he hasn't stopped growing. There is room to pack on muscle. I see him playing 3B now, but future first base or corner OF. Big power in the bat that he hasn't even tapped into yet. Excellent project for anyone. With his background in the INF, should be a smooth transition.

8/1/18 - At 6-foot-4, 205-pounds, Snyder is a long, lean, wiry strong athlete with broad shoulders and a strong lower half. The frame that can easily add weight and mass. Snyder has excellent instincts in anticipating his angles to the ball through his pre-pitch routine. His arm is a plus and able to make throws from all angles with accuracy and from multiple slots/angles. His throws show life. His glovework is consistent and his hands are softs while his transfers are clean. At the plate Snyder really projects because of his ability to drive the ball to all fields and his current power. He stays behind the ball and keeps his barrel on a consistent plane while maintaining his balance throughout his swing. His load is smooth and his stride short. Hands are fast while his swing is short to the ball and long through getting full extension. Snyder ran a 7.16 60 with an exit velocity of 88 mph and an infield velocity of 85 mph.

4/18/18 - Uncommitted. 6-foot-4, 205-pound, athletic frame that has strength throughout and is defined in the upper half. The first thing that sticks out with Snyder is his physical presence then you see him working infield drills and it's really a treat to watch. Snyder possesses the footwork typical of a middle infielder despite being a natural third baseman who shifted to second base because of injury. Snyder's range is above average and, when he shifts back to third base next season it should be enhanced. Snyder possesses above average arm strength and instincts - he's very light on his feet despite his size - and makes the difficult throw/play look routine because of his athleticism. Offensively is where Snyder really projects. Starting with an upright stance and the bat resting on his shoulder, Snyder rocks his body a bit as a trigger before unleashing the barrel into the hitting zone on a level plane that remains in the zone throughout the entirety of his swing. His fast hands allow him to catch up to pitches and his strength allows him to drive balls when he gets jammed. He turned on an 89 mph fastball that in on the hands hitting it out of the park but pulled just foul showing some impressive bat speed. Snyder was timed 4.38 home-to-first.

Scouting Report

11/10/18 - California Sr. Games. Five-foot-10, 235 pounds. This is the second viewing of Troy. Approach was to pull side for batting practice round. power is still developing. Moves well around the diamond and base paths. Showed he has smooth transfers and can turn the double play.

8/1/18 - In the outfield he attacks the ball with intent and shows clean exchanges before release. Arm is strong with some accuracy. Tends to stop feet at ball. At the plate he shows strong hands and excellent use of his lower half. Hands are fast and swing shows easy power to the gaps. Approach is gap-to-gap with present pull side power.
