New Episode LIVE now! At The Yard Podcast

ORANGE, CALIF. - The annual Top Prospect ID showcase came through SoCal with a stop at spacious and scenic Hart Park in Orange, home of the 2019 DIII National Champion Chapman Panthers and Orange Lutheran baseball teams. For many players it was a return to update their profile metrics while vying for invitations to fall games events, while for others it was an introduction to what PBR California is all about, which of course is baseball.

With so many talented players on hand it was a great day of showcase baseball. With TrackMan and Blast Motion data having been released, it's time to take a look at traditional scouting reports for Top Prospect Pitchers.

pitchers

Mason Seay, El Toro (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 5-6, 135-pounds. Baseball athleticism in a smaller and proportional frame.
Delivery: Overall ease to his delivery. Quick up and down with repeatability throughout. Two-way feel on the mound.
Arm Action: RH. Arm circle in the backs mirrors his longer outfield arm swing. Accelerates at best in the front of his throwing motion. Arm speed stayed consistent pitch to pitch.
FB: T81, 78-80 mph. Fastball showed sinking action with high probability for groundballs.
SL: 70-71 mph. True slider TrackMan showing with good horizontal breaking movement.
CH: 73-74 mph. Good armside run, playing off the fastball well, potential to be his best out pitch.

Gilbert Vargas, Canyon  (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP
Body: 5-7, 160-pounds. Young frame with room and need for growth.
Delivery: Showed some pitchability but still has a ways to go. Consistent delivery and feel on the mound his best pitching tools.
Arm Action: RH. Arm works with his build and body. Overall growth and development keys to arm action enhancement.
FB: T65, 62-65 mph. Commanded the fastball in the zone. Consistent release point and finish in the front. Reliable pitch in any count.
SL: 57-59 mph. Slow breaking slurvey slider that will cause trouble with hitters timing. Commanded the pitch as well and shows potential to continue upwards projection of the pitch.
CH: 60-63 mph. Changeup featured velocity almost identical to the fastball with less spin. Spin differential will help but the speed differential will be needed.

Benjamin Vargas, Canyon (CA), 2025
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Body: 5-8, 160-pounds. Smaller athletic build with more to come. Good athletic and baseball feel.
Delivery: Understands how to pitch; repeatable leg kick and arm action highlighting his ability. Keep his delivery simple with intent to fill up the zone.
Arm Action: RH. Arm action showing a tick in speed and consistency. Velocity up and staying up with more to come.
FB: T80, 78-80 mph. Fastball showed some sink and dive that will be most effective on the corners.
CB: 62-65 mph. Showed good feel for the curveball. Flipped the pitch over with ease and the low velocity will make this a tough pitch to time when located properly.
CH: 66-68 mph. The changeup is key to pitching success. Low spin and desirable velocity differential project this pitch to garner the most outs and create the most swings and misses. Continued development needed.

Michael Macias, Yucaipa (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: 2B/RHP
Body: 5-9, 144-pounds. Lean throughout, high waist, limbs have plenty of room for growth and maturity.
Delivery: Athletic position-player feel on the mound. Repeatable delivery; balanced, head inline, glove tap, consistent backside follow through.
Arm Action: RH. Arm works from a high release point, showing arm speed in the front and follow through. Consistent arm speed with off-speed pitches.
FB: T78, 77-78 mph. Had some trouble locating. Over the top slot that produced consistent 22.9 inch average induced vertical break. Around 2100 rpm average is above average for his velo.
SL: 58-60 mph. Slider showed good spin rate (2274) at low velocity. Struggled to consistently snap off in front and locate down and away but flashed the potential. Pitch has a chance to develop swing and miss.
CH: 62-65 mph. Changeup plays well off the fastball, lacking swing and miss movement but has ideal spin and velocity differential.

Braden Wilson, West Hills (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: LHP/OF
Body: 5-9, 170-pounds. Athletic, even build with a sturdy base. Some physicality with room for further development.
Delivery: Simple, up-tempo delivery with a controlled leg kick. Sits into the rear glute well and rides down the mound. Blocks well on the front side with some visible effort.
Arm Action: LH. Semi short arm stroke that is quick and gets up on time. Hides the ball well.
FB: T83, 80-82 mph. Fastball averaged 12.9 inches of Induced Vertical break and 13.8 inches of horizontal movement. Showed potential for above average ride with a peak of 17.1 IVB. T,  average rpm.
CB: 70-72 mph. Slurvy breaking ball that he showed the ability to get over for strikes. Almost equal drop and sweep with 4.5 inches and 3.9 inches, respectively.  T,  average rpm.
CH: 72-74 mph. Does a quality job of killing vertical break and separating movement from the FB. Average of 8.4 IVB to go along with 15.3 inches of horizontal movement.

Shea Blanchard, Laguna Beach (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/OF
Body: 5-11, 175-pounds. Proportional build with some present strength, athleticism and speed development needed.
Delivery: Balanced overall, does a good job staying inline with target, finishes in a good fielding position.
Arm Action: RH. Arm worked consistently but did not standout velocity wise as it did in the outfield. Consistent arm speed with offspeed pitches.
FB: T82, 81-83 mph. Fastball quality spin rate 2286 shows well down the line. Located well side-to-side.
SL: 70-76 mph. Slider gets over well for strikes. Flashed a high spin at 2300+ showing down the line ability.
CH: 75-78 mph. Changeup lacks ideal velocity differential but spin rate average is much lower than fastball helping greatly differentiate from fastball. This combination could create present and future swing and miss.

Shane Olvera Harle, St Margarets Episcopal (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: OF/LHP
Body: 5-11, 170-pounds. Two-way left-handed feel, room for added growth and strength, sneak speed.
Delivery: High leg lift, high 3/4 arm slot, point and shoot glove to target. Arm side key to command, moderate follow through.
Arm Action: LH. Average arm action, consistent speed, consistent pitch to pitch.
FB: T83, 80-82 mph. Good arm side run, lived on the arm side of the plate, command of the glove side will be key to pitches success.
CB: 66-68 mph. Classic slow breaking left-handed curveball that will offset hitters timing and create outs.
CH: 76-77 mph. Changeup speed and spin a little high for ideal range. Loosening of grip will give more sink and help create weak contact and potential swing and miss.

Sawyer Voortman, Orange Lutheran  (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP/C
Body: 5-11, 175-pounds. Athletic frame. Thicker lower half. Medium build that is maturing. Developing strength.
Delivery: Higher effort delivery. Side steps into a medium knee tuck. Really sits into his back leg as he gets down the mound. Angles his shoulders to a more uphill position as he gets into landing. Firm lead leg block at landing and is in a good fielding position.
Arm Action: RH. Full and loose arm swing in the back that gets to a higher 3/4 slot. Arm drops down all the way to the back knee. Gets good scapular load. Present arm speed with decent extension out front for his size.
FB: T81, 79-80 mph. More vertical moving fastball as it average around 0.3 inches of horizontal break. Slight above average spin for the velo at around 2050 spin average.
SL: 71-72 mph. Sweeping break due to minimal horizontal movement (avg. 0.6 VB).
CH: 71-73 mph.  Nice diving/fading action. Consistent arm speed as FB helps give it some added deception.

Andrew Campbell, Woodcrest Christian (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 6-1, 185-pounds. Strong frame that is proportional. Present strength in the lower half.
Delivery: Repeatable mechanics. Uses a higher knee tuck that gets him into a nice hip hinge. Rides that hip down the mound and gets good extension with the front leg (6.5 ft or above). Front leg and glove arm move the same direction into footstrike as it moves towards the 3B side and wraps back to be in line with home. Finishes with a slightly bent knee and falling off slightly towards home. At times got a little too rotational.
Arm Action: RH. Compact circle in the back. Gets a good scalp load without getting into too high a back elbow. Arm accelerates well into a 3/4 slot release.
FB: T87, 85-86 mph. Averaged around 2200 spin. Had some trouble locating  T,  average rpm.
SL: 67-73 mph. Minimal VB at around 0.6-inch average which makes it more sweeping.

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP
Body: 6-2, 175-pounds. Larger athletic frame. High waisted. Lots of projection if he adds some strength and fills out a bit more.
Delivery: Side steps into a straight up and down knee lift. Stands on the 1B side of the rubber and lands toward the 3B side for some slight crossfire. Slower tempo delivery. Firm front leg at landing and is in a good fielding position.
Arm Action: RH. Tighter in the back as the ball doesn't get higher than the hip. Some deception as ball is kept behind his body till it comes out at a 3/4 slot. Average arm speed but consistent with the speed and slots on all pitches.
FB: T80, 79-80 mph. Pounded the zone with it for a 100% zone percentage. Decent VB average of 19 inches. Extension at 7.17 is well above average and helps give his FB some more perceived velo.
SL: 68-71 mph. Minimal VB so more sweeping movement. Consistent location in the zone at 80% zone percentage.
CH: 75-77 mph. Straight change. Nice diving movement. Consistent low in the zone.
CUT: 72-74 mph. Thrown at a slightly higher tilt which gives it that cutting action. Some present VB gives it some nice depth where hitters will swing over it or produce GBs. 100% zone percentage.
