Sunbelt Tryout Infield Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Junior Sunbelt Tryout took place on April 24th at ThunderRidge High School. 54 prospects showed up and strutted their stuff in a pro-style workout. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position analysis of the event. We continue our look at this event with the Outfield position.

Logan Bistrup, Pomona High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 180-pound right hand hitting SS/3B who ran a 6.60 60.  Wide slightly open stance at the plate.  Strong leg drive and rotation on the swing.  Exit velocity was 86 MPH.  Swing path is slightly uphill with good bat control gap to gap.  Showed good feet at third base, cuts the ball off in the hole and shows a quick release with accuracy across the diamond.  Arm velocity was 77 MPH. 

Cole Blatchford, Mountain Vista High School, 2017
A 5-foot-10, 160-pound right hand hitting SS/RHP who ran a 7.22 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride for timing.  He shows good weight transfer and extension out front, exit velocity was 90 MPH.  Level swing path and good bat control during his live round and showed good gap power.  In the field he moves well left and right, gets behind the ball and quick feet get him in a good throwing position.  He was 79 MPH arm velocity across the field with accuracy.  

Tyler Carpenter, Fairview High School, 2017
A 6-foot-3, 200-pound left hand hitting 1B/LHP who ran a 7.39 60.  Tall presence at the plate, hits from an open stance with a high leg kick to come square.  Strong leg drive through the ball with good power to the pull side.  Swing path is uphill creating a ball with carry.  Exit velocity was 93 MPH.  In the field he moves well around the bag, showed good hands on the double play ball.  Arm velocity was 72 MPH.  On the mound he stands closed and gets slightly past balanced.  He drives hard to the plate and lands in-line on his delivery.  He throws from an over the top arm slot.  He featured 4 pitches including an 82 MPH fastball with late movement, a 72-73 MPH curve, 76-77 MPH change down in the zone and a 74-75 MPH slider.  

Austin Chouinard, Regis Jesuit High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0 195-pound right hand hitting 3B who ran a 7.50 60.  Simple balanced approach at the plate.  Uses a short stride to get weight moving forward and hits off a firm front side.  Swing path is level through the zone with good extension out front.  Exit velocity was 94 MPH.  In the field he moves well at third base.  Does a nice job of covering the hole.  He has a quick high ¾ release with accuracy.  Arm velocity was 82 MPH. 

Nick Ciccio, Lutheran High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 175-pound right hand hitting 2B/OF who ran a 6.70 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride for timing.  Hits off his front side with good weight transfer on the swing.  Exit velocity was 78 MPH.  In the field he uses his quickness to cover ground and get in good position.  He shows smooth hands and delivers from a high ¾ arm slot.  Arm velocity was 66 MPH.  On the mound he showed a good three pitch mix.  Throws from an over the top slot and lands in-line with the plate.  Fastball was 72 MPH, he added a 63-64 MPH curve and a 64-66 MPH change. 

Nathan Dill, Fort Collins High School, 2017
A 6-foot-3, 180-pound right hand hitting 1B/RHP who ran a 7.40 60.  At the plate he stand open with a long stride to get square.  Explosive through the ball with good weight transfer and extension at contact.  During his live round he hit several deep into the left-center gap.  Exit velocity was 88 MPH.  In the field he uses long strides to cover ground and shows good footwork around the bag.  He delivers an accurate ball to second base to start the double play and showcased a 78 MPH arm.  

Spencer Gendreau, Rocky Mountain High School, 2017
A 6-foot-1, 170-pound left hand hitting 1B/RHP who ran a 7.20 60.  Slightly open balanced set up at the plate.  Double taps his toes for timing on the pitch.  Hits off a firm front side with good leg drive through the zone.  Swing path is slightly uphill with good pull side power.  Exit velocity was 80 MPH.  In the field he moves well around the bag.  He showed good range and accuracy on balls to second and third base.  Arm velocity was 72 MPH.  On the mound he featured three pitches with good command of the zone on all of them.  He gets slightly past balanced and drive to the plate.  He lands in-line with the plate and throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  Fastball was 80 MPH with good location, he added a 68-69 MPH curve with 11/5 break and a 69-70 splitter down in the zone.

Kalen Hammer, Rocky Mountain High School, 2017
A 5-foot-9, 175-pound right hand hitting SS/2B who ran a 7.10 60.  Balanced at the plate with a slow load back on the pitch.  Long stride and good weight transfer showcases an aggressive swing.  Swing path is slightly uphill and his ball has good carry. He shows quick hands and good bat control to all fields.  Exit velocity was 87 MPH.  In the field he has quick feet and smooth glove work.  He moves well left and right and shows a quick accurate release from short.  Arm velocity was 84 MPH.    

Jimmy Holinger, Regis Jesuit High School, 2017
A 5-foot-11, 152-pound right hand hitting SS/2B who ran a 7.11 60.  Balanced at the plate with a long stride on the pitch.  Aggressive swing through the zone, slight uphill path with good power to the pull side.  He hits off a firm front side with good extension.  Exit velocity was 93 MPH.  In the field he uses his quickness to cover a lot of ground.  He shows good balance and feet to get into a proper throwing position.  He delivers an accurate ball from a high ¾ arm slot and had an arm velocity of 81 MPH. 

James Kester, Heritage High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 180-pound right hand hitting 2B/RHP who ran a 7.60 60.  Narrow, balanced set up at the plate with a high leg kick and long stride on the pitch.  Swing path is uphill with good weight transfer and extension at contact.  Exit velocity was 87 MPH.  In the field he shows good hands and a quick release.  He moved well to his glove side and delivered an accurate 84 MPH ball.  On the mound He stand square and get to balance on his motion.  He lands in-line with the plate but falls off to the right side on delivery.  He showcased 3 pitches with good command of the zone.  His fastball was 79 MPH with good location, he added a 68-69 MPH curve with 11/5 break and a 71-72 MPH change. 

Morgan McIntosh, Highlands Ranch High School, 2017
A 5-foot-9, 190-pound left hand hitting 2B/3B who ran a 7.32 60.  At the plate he stands open with a long stride to come square.  Weight stays on the back leg with strong hip rotation on the swing.  Exit velocity was 88 MPH with an uphill swing path, several balls carried well to the right center gap.  At third base, he shows good feet and quick hands.  He gets rid of the ball quickly and throws from a high ¾ release.  Arm velocity was 80 MPH with accuracy.

Michael Morris, Cherokee Trail High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 170-pound right hand hitting SS/3B who ran a 6.99 60.  Stands balanced at the plate with a long stride on the pitch.  Weight stays back during the swing with more rotation than transfer.  Swing path is uphill and exit velocity was 90 MPH.  In the field he uses his speed to move left and right.  He covers good ground and does a nice job getting his feet under him to make an accurate 77 MPH throw. 

Conner Nantkes, Cherokee Trail High School, 2017
A 6-foot-2, 180-pound left hand hitting 1B/LHP who ran a 7.49 60.  At the plate he is crouched with a slow load during the pitch.  He shows strong weight transfer and hits off a firm front side.  Swing path is slightly uphill and he hit several balls hard into the gaps during the live round.  Exit velocity was 93 MPH. At first he shows good range and footwork around the bag.  He throws from a ¾ arm slot with an arm velocity of 78 MPH. 

Nick Perez, Cherokee Trail High School, 2017
A 5-foot-10, 215-pound left hand hitting 3B who ran a 7.43 60.  Balanced at the plate with a slow load back and a double toe tap on the pitch.  An aggressive weight transfer and good extension out front had the ball jumping off his bat during the live round. Exit velocity was 93 MPH.  At third base, he shows good range and soft hands.  He moves well to the backhand side and gets rid of the ball quickly.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot and velocity was 79 MPH.

Rocco Porreco, Mullen High School, 2017
A 6-foot-2, 200-pound right hand hitting 3B/RHP who ran a 7.41 60.  Balanced at the plate with a slight dive in on the pitch.  Wide stance allows for an aggressive weight transfer on the swing.  Swing path is level through the zone and his exit velocity was 92 MPH.  In the field he shows good feet and positioning on balls at him and to his glove side.  He makes a strong accurate throw across the field at 81 MPH.  

Joey Salvato, Mullen High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 165-pound right hand hitting SS/RHP who ran a 6.80 60.  Balanced at the plate with a long stride on the pitch.  Weight and hands come aggressive through the zone on the swing.  Good pull side power during the live round.  Exit velocity was 87 MPH.  In the field he has good reflexes and moves well on all balls.  He shows a quick release and accuracy from short.  Arm velocity was 81 MPH.  On the mound he starts square and gets to balance.  He drives hard to the plate and lands in-line on his delivery.  Arm slot is over the top and he featured good control of three pitches.  Fastball was 84 MPH with late movement, he also featured 67-68 MPH curve with 11/5 break and a 72-73 MPH change down in the zone. 

Marcus Salvato, Mullen High School, 2017
A 5-foot-9, 140-pound left hand hitting 2B/OF who ran a 7.00 60.  Balanced at the plate with a slight leg kick and load back on the pitch.  He hits off a firm front side and show strong rotation during the swing.  Swing path is slightly uphill and he showed good bat control during the live round using all parts of the field.  Exit velocity was 83 MPH.  In the field he shows good feet and hands on ground balls at him and up the middle.  He gets rid of the ball quickly with very little wasted movement.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  Arm velocity was 81 MPH with accuracy.

Nate Semmler, Chatfield High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 185-pound right hand hitting 1B/3B who ran a 7.40 60.  Stands tall and balanced at the plate with a short stride on the pitch.  Hands load back and come through the zone on a level swing path.  Good weight transfer with extension out front help produce an 80 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he shows a good presence around the bag and quick feet on the double play ball.  He delivers from a high ¾ arm slot at 72 MPH with accuracy. 

John Sorenson, Rocky Mountain High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 195-pound left hand hitting SS/3B who ran a 7.31 60.  Stands open and balanced at the plate.  Uses a high leg kick to come square, hits off a firm front side with strong weight transfer on the swing.  Swing path is slightly uphill and showed good bat control being able to hit to all fields.  Exit velocity was 90 MPH.  In the field he is active and covers a lot of ground.  Quick feet and soft hands keep him in good position on all balls.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot and showcased an 81 MPH arm with accuracy to the bag. 

Luke Vargas, Prairie View High School, 2017
A 5-foot-8, 180-pound right hand hitting 3B/2B who ran a 7.50 60.  Stands balanced at the plate with a long stride and high hand load on the pitch.  He shows strong weight transfer on the swing and gets good extension out front at contact.  During his live round he hit several balls hard in the left center gap.  Exit velocity was 85 MPH.  In the field he does a nice job of staying square through the ball.  Max effort on his throws from an over the top arm slot.  Arm velocity was 74 MPH across the field.
