2018 Florida Trials: Catcher Breakdown

Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

Saturday, July 14, the University of Central Florida in Orlando hosted PBR’s Florida Trials. This event was open to all high school graduating classes (2019 to 2022) and served as an integral identifier for upcoming high-profile, invite-only events, like All-State Games and Future Games, as well as Preseason All-State and the national Super 60 showcase.

Over the course of the next week we will break down each and every player in attendance. We have announced the Future Games and All State Games Invites, and will announce top standouts following all of the positional breakdowns. Today, we take a look at the catchers in attendance, in no particular order:

Joaquin Monque C / 1B / Cypress Bay, FL / 2020

Committed to St. Leo University shortly after the event. Currently stands at 6-foot, 185 pounds with a physical, athletic frame. Showed an above average arm behind the plate with pop times in the 1.92-2.06 range. The hands and feet work very well, he is flexible and has all of the tools to be an above average catcher. Offensively, he took one of the loudest rounds of BP. Works with rhythm and showed present pull power and can see having above average power in the future. There is upside both defensively and at the plate.

Brendan Roney C / 2B / Key West, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds with a strong, solid frame. Showed above average all around defensive tools. In the infield, he has solid defensive actions and range. Behind the plate he is athletic with quick twitch actions. The hands work very well, haas present hip flexibility and an overall feel for the position. Offensively, he has a simple set up and swing. There can be a little length, but when he is compact he uses strength in the wrist and lower half to generate above average bat speed. Showed present barrel awareness and despite not getting a hit, he was on the barrel in both of his at-bats.

Declan McDermott C / OF / Viera , FL / 2020

Uncommitted, listed at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, he has a strong lower half and has filled out over the last year. Defensively, he moves well behind the plate. Shows a feel to block and receive, the arm will need to improve some, but there are solid defensive actions. The bat continues to play up. He has a strong, balanced lower half and really clears the back side well. The swing is compact and he has a lot of barrell awareness. Translated to game play where he drove a triple to left-center field. The bat continues to stand out and will be a follow as he continues to mature and add strength.

Bennett Lee C / 2B / Jesuit, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot, 190 pounds with a solid, athletic frame and strong lower half. Showed offensive potential and a feel for the barrel during batting practice when he sprayed line drives all over, going gap-to-gap. He is upright and simple. The swing generates bat whip and leverage and should develop into above average power. Was also equally if not more impressive behind the plate where he threw out two base runners at second, one time from his knees. He has an above average feel for the position. Flexible with strong wrists and ability to receive, block and throw. Overall, very high ceiling and high follow and shouldn’t be uncommitted long.

Travis Stapleton C / 3B / South Lake, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-10,190 pounds with a strong, stocky frame. Displays present catch, throw and receive skills. The pop times ranged from 1.98-2.01 and were consistently on the bag. The tools translate to above average defensive ability in game play. Offensively, he uses his strong lower half, sinking into the back leg. Could benefit from a stronger front side, but has a natural uphill path, feel for barrel and gap to gap power.

Ricardo Feliciano C / 3B / Edgewater, FL / 2018

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-8, 169 pounds on a compact frame and a strong lower half. Defensively, he has quality footwork, a clean transfer and pop times ranging from 2.09-2.13. Overall, he is a solid defensive catcher. Offensively, the left handed hitter is simple and quiet. Uses his strong lower half well and has loose wrists. Could be a solid late addition for a school looking for a 2018 catcher.

Christopher Dorta C / OF / Mater Lakes Academy, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-11, 165 pounds with a lean, athletic frame. Offensively, the right handed hitter has a wide base and simple, short stride. Has present strength, especially in the lower half, and works to extension with an exit velocity of 80 mph. Defensively, he has a short quick release. Pop times ranged from 2.07-2.14. Has present strength and quality defensive tools that will continue to improve with flexibility.

Hunter Brown C / RHP / South Eugene, OR / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. Has a strong lower half. Offensively, he could benefit from clearing the back side, but there is present barrell awareness. Exit velocity topped at 74 mph. Defensively, he has quality hands and sound footwork. Could improve quickness of footwork and transfer, but showed accurate throws and pop times ranging from 2.15-2.17.
