FORT MYERS—The 5A state championship game featured powerhouse Archbishop McCarthy, who was looking to win their fifth championship in six years, and Mosely, who was seeking redemption from a state championship loss a couple years back to this same team. McCarthy was able to jump to an early 1-0 lead in the first and not look back as they received a strong pitching performance from 2015 RHP and North Carolina State commit Christian Demby. Offensively, the Mavericks were led by 2017 1B Alejandro Toral who went 2-2 with a double and RBI. Archbishop McCarthy went on to win this game by a final score of 3-0.

The Mavericks picked up their first inning run on a single that was ripped through the right side by Toral. After a scoreless second and third, McCarthy picked up another run in the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly by 2017 IF/RHP Ubaldo Lopez. The final run plated by the Mavericks came in the sixth on a fielder’s choice.

Archbishop McCarthy has now won five state championships in the last six years, making them undoubtedly the strongest program in the state of Florida over the past five years. Led by mostly sophomores this season, they will look to continue their excellence for at least the next couple of seasons.
