Flanagan Takes Down No 3 Calvary Christian 8-7 in 8 Innings

Doug Freeman
Florida Executive Director

The no 3 team in the PBR Florida Preseason Power25, Calvary Christian, opened up the 2019 season at Flanagan High School with the No 2 prospect in Florida’s 2021 class Andy Painter on the mound. Painter would start out dominating the Flanagan lineup, striking out six an only allowing one hit through three innings.

2020 RHP D’Mani Scarbriel would match the talented sophomore for Calvary though. Through three innings, Scarbriel would also strike out six batters, while allowing one unearned run. Flanagan would get to Painter in the fourth, with a single from Miguel Useche, a double from Alec Ducasse and a two out, two RBI double from the uncommitted senior Max Baldaccini would give Flanagan the 2-1 lead. Flanagan would proceed to add four more runs in the fifth thanks to back-to-back doubles from Stephen Schissler and Ray Rivera, followed by back-to-back singles from Useche and MIchael Laguardia.

The No 1 prospect in 2021 in Florida, Irv Carter, would come into relief with two out and two on in the fifth. After walking the first hitter, he would proceed to get a strikeout to end the rally in the fifth. Calvary would answer right back in the top of the sixth as Dante Girardi would lead off with a walk and a single by Mykanthnoy Valdez followed by a two RBI double from Ryan Keenan and an RBI single from Kyle Tako and the Eagles would tie the game at 5-5. Carter would strike out a pair, in a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth, working mostly 88-91 mph with an above average slider and changeup.

Thanks to an error on a ground ball, Ben Rozenblum would come to bat in the seventh and drive a homerun to left-center and give Calvary a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

A leadoff error and a pair of walks would bring up Alec Ducasse with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh. Ducassee would take a two strike fastball the other way and tie the game at 7-7 in the seventh for Flanagan.

After Calvary failed to score in the top of the eighth, an error and a stolen base would put Tyler Epstein in scoring position in the eight with one out. Ray Rivera would jump on the first pitch he saw, driving it the other way over the left fielder’s head to give Flanagan the walk-off, 8-7 win over No 3 Calvary.
