Kansas Underclass: Infielder Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas held the Kansas Underclass Invitational Showcase on January 28 at Hoover Field in Wichita.  Nearly 30 players in the 2019 and 2020 classes from around the region attended. 

Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. In the coming days, we will break down the event position-by-postion,taking a look at infiedlers today.  Although some infielders participated in other positions, this is just a break down of the infield performance.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

INFIELDERS

Gavin Adams, 3B, Valley Center, 2020
Adams is a 6-foot 165-pound right-handed hitting third-baseman in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.76 60 and a 4.72 home-to-first.  He has a 74 mph exit velo. At the plate, tall and balanced stance, smooth rocking load to back side, some hand load, swing produced mostly pull side contact.  On the infield, 73 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, fields ball in athletic position, clean transfer, throws were close to the bag from across the infield.

Alex Epp, 2B/SS, Maize South, 2019
Epp is a 5-foot-9 left-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.83 laser timed 60 and a 4.45 home-to-first, one of top LHH times.  He posted a 77 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts slightly open, fluid rhythm in pre swing, in line stride, middle to oppo approach, balanced during swing.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, one of top infield velos on the day, works around ball with active footwork, plays through the catch, clean glove to hand transfer, mostly accurate throws.

Andres Fonseca, 3B, St. Thomas Aquinas, 2020
Fonseca is a 5-foot-6 170-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 8.49 60 and a 4.97 home to first.  He posted an 82 mph exit velo and has a strong, durable frame. At the plate, open stance, controlled leg kick, level bat path through the zone, pull side contact during batting practice, flashed power.  On the infield, made all plays cleanly, 61 mph across the infield, quick catch and throw, mostly accurate throws.

Jordan Helm, SS, Maize, 2019
Helm is a 5-foot-9 145-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.13 laser timed 60, one of the top times of the day, and a 4.50 home to first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic stance, short and smooth load, short stride with no wasted movement in hands, level path, hands work inside the ball, hard solid contact to middle and opposite field during hitting evaluations, repeats swing.  On the infield, 71 mph positional velo, athletic footwork in sync with soft hands, quick catch and throw, high three quarters release, athletic actions, accurate throws. 

Griffin Henry, SS, Lee’s Summit West (MO), 2020
Henry is a 6-foot-1 180-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.58 60 and a 4.47 home to first.  He has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, smooth rhythm and slight load in hands, quick bat speed, level through the zone, flashed pull side power with gap-to-gap approach, hard consistent contact during hitting evaluations.  On the infield, 79 mph positional velo, top infield velo for the event, quick and loose arm speed, over other top release, fields ball in athletic position with athletic footwork and soft hands, throws are accurate with backspin carry. 

Camden Jurgensen, 3B, Maize, 2020
Jurgensen is a 5-foot-10 145-pound right-handed hitting third-baseman in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.02 laser timed 60, one of the top times of the day, and a 4.32 home to first, another top time for the event.  He has an 84 mph exit velo. At the plate, open and tall stance, controlled leg lift to stride, loose hands creates bat whip, middle of the field contact.  On the infield, 67 mph positional velo, loose and easy arm action, quick feet with soft hands, quick transfer, momentum through catch, athletic actions, mostly accurate throws.

Andrez Mares, 2B, Wichita West, 2019
Mares is a 5-foot-10 170-pound right-handed hitting second-baseman in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran an 8.02 60 and a 4.89 home-to-first.  He has a 77 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, repeatable and simple load, minimal stride, level path, middle to pull gap contact during hitting evaluations.  On the infield, 65 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, long arm circle, clean exchange, fluid footwork to the ball, most throws close to the bag at first base.

Alec Michaud, SS, Fort Scott, 2019
Michaud is a 5-foot-10 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.39 60 and a 4.62 home to first.  He has a 72 mph exit velo. At the plate, short and compact swing, athletic stance, short stride with short path to contact, consistent hard contact to the pull side during hitting evaluations.  On the infield, 67 mph positional velo, high three quarters arm slot, feet are athletic and quick to ball, plays through the catch, cleans glove to hand transfer, mostly accurate throws.

Gage Oller, 3B, Kingman, 2020
Oller is a 5-foot-7 140-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.26 laser timed 60 and a 4.78 home to first.  He has an exit velo of 81 mph with a projectable tall and lean frame.  At the plate, simple swing mechanics, balanced set up, short stride with no wasted movement, free hands, level path, gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, 65 mph positional velo, short three quarters arm action, fluid footwork to the ball, momentum through the catch, soft hands with clean transfer, mostly accurate throws.

Joe Placek, 3B, Olathe Northwest, 2020
Placek is a 5-foot-11 155-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.89 laser timed 60 and a 5.03 home to first.  He has a 79 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts with a wide base, short stride, loads lower half, swing produced solid contact to middle and pull gap, flashed power to pull side.  On the infield, 68 mph positional velo, three quarters release, smooth footwork to the ball, soft hands, clean exchange, mostly accurate throws.

William Ponce, SS, Wellsville, 2020
Ponce is a 5-foot-6 130-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.30 60 laser timed and a 4.31 home to first, top LHH time for the event. At the plate, starts loaded in back side, some load, toe tap, level path, middle to opposite field line drives, level path, balanced during swing.  On the infield, 65 mph positional velo, quick catch and throw, long arm circle, three quarters release, clean exchange.

Cole Sphar, 3B, Maize, 2020
Sphar is a 5-foot-7 160-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.75 laser timed 60 and has an exit velo of 80 mph. At the plate, switch hitter with athletic frame, swing produced line drives to middle/oppo part of field on the right side, no wasted movement in load with small rocking motion to load on both side, short inline stride, more middle to pull side contact on left side.  On the infield, 66 mph positional velo, hands in sync with footwork, plays through the catch with quick exchange, loose and easy high three quarters arm action, mostly accurate throws.

Kruz Wahwahsuck, 3B, Leavenworth, 2019
Wahwahsuck is a 5-foot-9 160-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 8.17 laser timed 60 and a 4.95 home to first and has a strong, durable build.  He has a 69 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts loaded in back side, short stride, quick and aggressive hands, middle to oppo contact, line drive the other way, level path with balanced body.  On the infield, 65 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, clean transfer with quick release, fluid footwork to the ball, mostly accurate throws.
