Starks Converts Game-Changing Speed into All-League Performances

When your Twitter header has your 40-yard dash time quoted and, for good measure, the word Speed in the headline you better be fast - and you better be able to back it up.  That's exactly what Miles Starks ('14 Andover HS) did at the Johnson County CC baseball showcase in late January when he ripped off a 6.5 60-yard dash time.

We had a chance to talk with the 6-foot, 170-pound Central Kansas speedster earlier this week.

"This fall I was totally focused on football and was thinking that's what I was going to do in college.  After the season I decided that college baseball was probably a better path in the long run," said Starks who helped lead the Trojans to a 9-1 season on the gridiron this fall as a wide receiver and kick returner.

Over the last several months the unsigned senior has weighed both baseball and football offers from junior colleges and Division II schools.  But, clearly, putting the 6.5/60 on the board was a turning point.

"Things have definitely picked up college baseball-wise since January.  I've been making visits and talking on the phone with coaches a lot since then," Starks added.

Starks isn't just a guy that runs fast that happens to play baseball either - he proved himself last spring.  On the year he hit .393 with four doubles, four triples and collected nine stolen bases in nine attempts.  League coaches took notice of his performance and he was named All-AVCTL as a second baseman and right-handed pitcher.  This spring he's likely to move to shortstop.

Starks currently hold a 3.35 GPA and scored a 24 ACT.  He's leaning towards majoring in business or sports management in college.
