Top-10 Profiles of 2020: No. 1 Cooper Kelly

As the year starts to unwind, our staff will start to highlight the top-10 most viewed profiles from 2020 - starting at 10 and counting down. 

We’ll wrap up our countdown today by highlighting Blue Valley Southwest’s Cooper Kelly, the most viewed profile in the state of Kansas this year. Kelly is currently ranked fourth overall in the state’s 2022 class and 363rd nationally, too. 

A switch-hitter with natural up-the-middle-actions, it’s hard not to dream of the potential Kelly has on the diamond, especially once he starts to fill out his projectable frame. Our National Supervisor, Nathan Rode, highlighted Kelly in a “2022s On The Rise” piece back in April and this is what he had to say: 

“Kelly has a lean, athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds with some present strength. A switch-hitter, he has a pure and efficient swing from the right side, barreling balls to all fields. From the left, he shows a pull approach with consistent lift and some pop. Defensively, he shows a ton of confidence with above-average footwork and advanced hands. He makes accurate throws at 85 across the diamond.”

Committed to Kansas, Kelly still has two more seasons left of his prep career, where he and several other highly regarded prospects will look to make Blue Valley Southwest one of the more talented high schools in the state.

Cooper Kelly, Blue Valley Southwest (KS), 2022
Positional Profile: SS A switch-hitter with feel from both sides of the plate, able to stick up the middle defensively. A high-follow in his class.
Body: 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. Athletic, wiry, well-proportioned build; more maturity to come.
Defense: Athletic fielding position, fields with a confident rhythm, fluid footwork, silky smooth hands, clean funnels leading to quick release, advanced defender that can stick up the middle.
Arm: RH.  INF - 85 mph.  Short, loose arm action, high 3/4 slot, lively arm.
Hit: SH. Well balanced setup, smooth load from both sides of the plate, leg kick trigger, short stride.  Loose hands, short, level path through the zone to contact, steady line drive approach to all fields, more juice from the left side, rhythm through contact.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Easily finds the barrel.
Run: 7.45 runner in the 60.
