Underclass Trials: Stats Breakdown

Trey Sofio
Louisiana Scouting Director

The annual Louisiana Underclass Trials took place on Sunday, May 20th, at St. Thomas Aquinas high school, in Hammond, LA. The open event saw eighty-four underclass prospects from across the state of Louisiana perform in front of several college coaches, and the Prep Baseball Report Louisiana scouting staff.

Sunday’s Underclass Trials was perhaps the most talent-rich in the four-year history of the event, as numerous prospects emerged onto the recruiting scene with noteworthy performances.

In the days and weeks to come there will be complete coverage from Sunday’s Underclass Trials. Today, our scouting staff kicks off its analysis by taking a look at the top statistical performers from the event.

+ 2021 SS Reese Smith (Denham Springs HS, LA) is already one of the top ranked middle infielders in Louisiana’s 2021 class, but the 5-foot-9, 160-pounder continued to impress on Sunday, showing off advanced actions with quick, fluid footwork, and quality range to both sides. Smith posted an event best 84 mph positional velocity from the infield, showing carry, and accuracy on throws across the diamond.

+ 2021 3B/RHP Brant Smith (Live Oak HS, LA) posted numbers near the top of several categories on Sunday, including an event best 90 mph exit velocity. The physical 6-foot-1, 210-pound left-handed hitter had one of the better rounds of batting practice on the day, showing off present power to his pull side with obvious strength at contact. A legitimate two-way prospect, the right-handed pitcher ran his fastball up to 85 mph with heaviness and life to the arm side.

+ 2020 RHP/2B Luke McGibboney (Catholic(BR) HS, LA) is one to watch this summer, as the wiry 6-foot, 170-pound right-hander pitched 83-86 mph with his fastball on Sunday, showing quick arm speed and a low effort delivery. McGibboney saw significant mound time this Spring for perennial power Catholic(BR), as the rising junior has feel for a quality 3-pitch mix, and his stuff should only sharpen as he adds strength and size.

+ 2020 C Jake Harvill (Evangel HS, LA) showed off high-level catch and throw skills on Sunday, posting an event best 78 mph positional velocity for catchers, as well as a 1.87-second pop times. The strong 6-foot, 205-pound right-handed hitter also showed off his strength and bat speed during batting practice, posting an 89 mph exit velocity, as well as showing quality athleticism for his size, posting a 7.15 60-yard dash.

+ Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, 2020 LHP/OF Dylan Carmouche (University Lab HS, LA) is already one of the top ranked players in Louisiana’s 2020 class, and the 6-foot-5, 202-pounder topped the leaderboard in several categories once again. Carmouche ran his fastball up to 86 mph on the mound, posted an event best 85 mph positional velocity from the outfield, and the switch-hitter also posted an exit velocity of 86 mph.
