MOKAN Summer Trials: Catchers Analysis

On July 5, Prep Baseball Report-Missouri/Kansas held the MOKAN Summer Trials at LaRoche Field in Fort Scott, Kansas.  Over 60 players on the 2021-2018 classes attended. 

We will break down the event position-by-position, taking a look at the catchers today.  Player profiles have been updated with video, running times, throwing velocities and profile picture.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

Catchers

Brody Bowles C / Fort Scott , KS / 2020

Bowles is a 5-foot-8 135-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.18 60 and has an exit velocity of 77 mph. At the plate, balanced set up, short stride, minimal load with pre-swing rhythm, level path, hands work inside the ball, consistent hard contact gap-to-gap during hitting evaluations, short and compact swing.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.13 and 2.26-seconds, 70 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, smooth and athletic actions, clean transfer, wide stance, accurate throws.

Grant Howard C / Olathe Northwest, KS / 2019

Howard is a 6-foot 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.25 60 and has an exit velocity of 75 mph. At the plate, smooth rhythm, hands walk way from stride, loose hands, feel for the barrel, flashed pull side pop, gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.07 and 2.20-seconds, 70 mph positional velo, quick over the top release, thin set up, fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws, occasional carry, lean and projectable build.

Kyle Jackson C / Field Kindley , KS / 2020

Jackson is a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.07 60 and has an exit velocity of 75 mph. At the plate, thin and tall set up, slightly open, in line stride, controlled swing with quick bat speed, pull side contact, loose hands.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.08 and 2.28-seconds, 75 mph positional velo, three quarters release, low exchange, fluid footwork on time with transfer, thin set up to receive, mostly accurate throws.

Jackson Nicklaus C / Andover, KS / 2021

Nickluas is a 5-foot-7 140-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 7.72 60 and has a 67 mph exit velocity. At the plate, smooth rhythm, accelerated and loose hands, balanced set up, controlled in line stride, swing produced hard consistent contact to middle and pull side, level path through the zone, stayed on ball after contact.  Behind the plate, over the top release, thin set up to receive, slight staggered, quick actions in transfer and feet, 2.18 to 2.40-second pop times, 67 mph positional velo, momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws.

Lucas Pringle C / Mill Valley , KS / 2021

Pringle is a 5-foot-8 145-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 7.78 60 and has an exit velocity of 68 mph.  At the plate, balanced set up, some hand load, compact and repeatable, level path through the zone, swing produced middle to pull side line drives, body stays under control.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.14 and 2.43-seconds, 68 mph positional velo, short over the top release, fluid transfer, sit high to receive, quick feet, mostly accurate throws. 

Auggie Viles C / Rockhurst, MO / 2021

Viles is a strong and durable 5-foot-10 155-pound switch hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 7.99 60 and has an exit velocity of 68 mph from the left side and 75 mph exit velocity from the right side. At the plate, wide base, no wasted movement, loose hands and quick bat speed, occasional power to pull side, slightly closed stride, similar swing mechanics from both sides, hard contact gap-to-gap from both sides.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.15 and 2.28-seconds, wide set up, flexible, over the top release, 68 mph positional velo, fluid transfer, hands and feet work together, short and quick jab step, mostly accurate throws, flashing carry.
