The Prep Baseball Report IA Underclass Prospect Games event took place on Sunday, August 4, 2019. The event was held at Duane Banks Field on the campus of the U. of Iowa. The event featured prospects from the 2021 & 2022 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and numerous college coaches in attendance. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Underclass Prospect Games.

As we drill down into the statistics: 

+  7 players ran sub-4.5 Home-To-First times.
+  32 players recorded 85+ mph Exit Velocities
+  21 players recorded 80+ mph Infield Throws
+  12 players recorded 80+ mph Outfield Throws
+  12 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+  7 catchers recorded sub-2.1 Pop Times
+  29 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

pitchER EVALUATIONS (ALPHA)

Sam Andrews, RHP/3B, Ankeny, 2022
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; higher tucked balance point, long arm action with slight stab down, swings open down mound, upright on release. Fastball was 80-82 mph with slight cutting action at plate. Solid spin and break on 11/5 curveball. Down cutting action to changeup towards glove side. 5.2 home to first time. Square stance, slight shoulder load, guides barrel through zone, spray contact, short stiff finish, 71 mph exit velocity. Higher fielding position, avg. hands and feet, needs continued development with fielding and throwing footwork, 72 mph arm across infield.

Jacob Barton, OF/LHP, Waukee, 2021
5-foot-11, 155-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.26 home to first time. Body load with rhythm in hands, line drive approach, solid bat speed, comfortable in box, repeats swing well with occasional pop in bat, 92 mph exit velocity. Above avg. actions in field, works through ball, is athletic fielding and throwing, shows carry to target with accuracy, 82 mph arm from outfield. Athletic on mound, clean compact arm action, ball comes out well in front. Fastball was 79-80 mph with varying action to plate. Small shape with tight spin on 1/7 breaking ball. Above avg. feel for changeup with quality fade and sink action away from right handed hitters.

Zane Beebe, OF/RHP, Davenport North, 2021
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.77 home to first time. Square stance, long stride, deep pre-set hands, spray contact, mid/pull approach, 83 mph exit velocity. Slower tempo to field, needs improvements with routes and footwork, tends to stop to throw, avg. carry and accuracy to target, 74 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; slow tempo, short arm action, stiff on release. Fastball was straight at 68-71 mph. Loose spin and shape on 11/5 curveball. Solid down action on changeup thrown with stiff wrist.

Blayde Bellis, OF/LHP, Wapsie Valley, 2021
5-foot-7, 145-pound left-handed hitting 2-wa player. 4.59 home to first time. Open stance, shoulder top to load, slight lift in swing plane, uses middle of field, solid consistent contact, 75 mph exit velocity. Shows quickness in field, solid actions, requires additional arm strength, elevated throws to target with avg. accuracy and carry, 74 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; quicker tuck and turn over rubber, one piece arm action, stiffness on release and falls off to third base side. Fastball was 74-77 mph for strikes. 1/7 breaking ball has small shape with loose spin.

Cael Boever, SS/RHP, Sioux City East, 2021
6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. One of top overall performers at event. 4.69 home to first time. Balanced stride, barrel tip to trigger swing, some larger movements effect timing, when squared shows hard pull side contact, flashes of pop in bat with line drive and fly ball approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Athletic with good actions in field, above avg. hands and feet, moves with confidence and easy effort, above avg. carry to bag with clean loose arm action, 86 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; athletic with rhythm and body control, longer arm action, slight wrap on back side, cuts across and through body in front. Fastball was 81-84 mph with late run and sink action. Small shape with higher spin and late break on 10/4 curveball. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed with solid fade and sink.

Hunter Brown, RHP/1B, Southeast Polk, 2021
6-foot-6, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; lifts into medium balance point, short arm action, short on release. Fastball was 78-80 mph with varying action to plate. Small shape with avg. break; inconsistent arm action and release point. Solid/avg. action on changeup at plate. 4.82 home to first time. Body load, stays short to contact, occasional pop in bat with long levers, harder pull side fly ball contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, sure hands, accurate arm to base, 80 mph arm across infield.

Kinnick Christensen, SS/RHP, West Marshall, 2022
6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.90 home to first time. Showed above avg. round of bp, simple swing with easy load, repeats swing well, minimal effort, consistently squared baseball with hard contact to mid/pull side of field, 82 mph exit velocity. Solid actions, lighter on his feet with appropriate footwork, confident hands to field, solid accuracy and carry to bag, 77 mph arm strength across infield.

Dylan Christensen, SS/RHP, Norwalk, 2022
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 5.21 home to first time. Body load with leg kick trigger, looks to elevate, mid/pull approach, avg. contact, tends to pull off baseball early. 79 mph exit velocity. 80 mph arm across infield and 83 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; controlled tempo, higher balance point, long arm path through release. Fastball was 74-77 mph with varying action to plate. 10/4 shape with avg. break and spin on curveball for strikes. On mound; solid rhythm in delivery, compact arm action, drops elbow on breaking ball, turns hand over on release. Fastball was 77-78 mph with avg. action to plate. Small shape with solid spin on 10/4 breaking ball. Fade action on changeup with avg. feel for zone.

Anthony Dennis, SS/RHP, Southeast Polk, 2021
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.57 home to first time. Square stance, leg kick trigger, drops hands in load, light uphill path, spray contact, mid/pull approach with solid contact, 80 mph exit velocity. Sits back to field, softer hands, slight hop to throw, solid/avg. actions, accurate to bag on throws, 76 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; rocker step into medium balance point, late hand break, high glove, short arm action out front. Fastball was 79-81 mph for strikes. Small shape and break on 11/5 curveball. Avg. feel for changeup currently.

Nate Dierickx, LHP/OF, Durant, 2021
6-foot, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; solid athlete, clean loose arm from low ¾ slot, ball jumps out of hand in front. Fastball is quick with easy effort at 77-80 mph with flashes of life. Good spin and shape on 1/7 slider at 70-72 mph. Quality run and sink on changeup away from right handed hitter. 4.81 home to first time. Square stance, choppy rhythm and actions, lower hand set, flat swing plane, spray contact to middle of field, 74 mph exit velocity. Avg. routes and angles, slower tempo to field, throws flat footed, long loose arm action, has carry and accuracy to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield.

John Doty, RHP/1B, Waukee, 2021
6-foot-3, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; rocker step into higher controlled balance point, slight sideways arm path, short stride down mound on stiff front leg. Fastball was 79-81 mph with slight running action to plate. Larger shape and break on 11/5 curveball. Changeup is firm and straight. 5.14 home to first time. Tall narrow stance, dive bomb approach, above avg. pop in bat, shows pull side power, 89 mph exit velocity. Sure hands and solid receiver around bag, above avg. arm for position, 77 mph arm across infield.

Ethan Drown, 3B/RHP, Urbandale, 2021
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.75 home to first time. Square stance with body load, gets stuck on backside through contact, mid/pull approach, shows flashes of pop in bat, consistent line drive and fly ball contact off bat, 87 mph exit velocity. Avg. hands and feet, sits back to field, decent athlete, should develop with instruction, accurate arm to bag, 78 mph arm strength across infield. 77 mph arm with 2.00-2.15 pop times. On mound; swings into short balance point, sideways arm path, short on release across body. Fastball was 82-84  from lower ¾ slot with occasional life. Avg. shape and spin on 11/5 breaking ball. Down action on changeup with avg. fade.

Easton Dunwoody, OF/RHP, Ankeny, 2022
5-foot-8, 145-pound switch hitting 2-way player. 4.66 home to first time. LHH- Double tap leg trigger, line drive swing, mid/pull approach, solid contact. RHH- similar mechanics, more strength, avg. barrel skills, spray contact, 77 mph exit velocity. Solid tempo, works through ball, solid overall athleticism, avg. carry and accuracy to target, 78 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; long arm swing, ¾ slot, lands slightly across body, is upright on release. Fastball was 76-77 mph with solid run and sink at plate. Avg. spin and shape on 11/5 curveball. Changeup is straight with minimal fade.

Jack Emanuel, SS/RHP, Johnston, 2022
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.88 home to first time. Square stance with body load, shows rhythm in swing, lined drive path, flashes loose swing with line drive pop occasionally, 79 mph exit velocity. Taller fielding position, head out over feet, sure hands, solid athlete, accurate arm to bag, 77 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short compact arm action, solid rhythm and control in delivery, has extension to plate. Fastball was 74-77 mph with varying action to the plate. Avg. spin and shape on 11/5 curveball. Higher spin with solid break on slider. Has fade on changeup and is thrown for strikes.

Ben Everhart, RHP/1B, Waukee, 2021
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; controlled delivery, long arm action, easy effort on release. Fastball was 82-85 mph with varying action to plate. Small shape and break on 11/5 curveball. Shows feel for changeup with solid fade and sink for strikes. 4.84 home to first time. Narrow stance with slight leg kick trigger, slight inverted path, some strength in barrel, fly ball approach, works gap to gap, 87 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete at position, sure hands, moves around bag well, accurate arm, 76 mph arm across infield.

Jacob Frost, 1B/LHP, Oakville (MO), 2021
6-foot-1, 205-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. #71 ranked player in Missouri 2021 class. 4.85 home to first time. Open stance, rolling hand load, clean path to contact, spins out with lower half losing power, flashes hard contact to middle of field, 89 mph exit velocity. Easy actions in field, confident fielder, moves well around bag, above avg. receiver on throws across, 80 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; higher balance point, solid sequence to delivery, arm is clean with moderate effort. Fastball was 79-81 mph, consistent strikes, with later run and sink. Avg. shape and spin on larger breaking 1/7 curveball. Solid down action with fade on changeup thrown near fastball arm speed.

Carter Furness, RHP/SS, Bettendorf, 2021
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; swings into higher athletic tuck and turn balance point, compact arm action, slight hitchiness and stab on backside. Fastball was 79-83 mph with solid cutting action at plate. Solid/avg. 11/5 breaking ball for strikes. Cut action on changeup to glove side of plate. 4.95 home to first time. Carter Gallagher, SS/RHP, Waterloo Columbus, 2022
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. 4.63 home to first time. Easy body load, line drive swing, loses posture through contact, occasional pop to middle of field, 76 mph exit velocity. Lighter on his feet, works out front, flashes occasional actions and athleticism, solid/avg. accuracy to bag, 76 mph arm across infield. JT Garcia, RHP/OF, Johnston, 2022
6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; segmented delivery, collapses down mound, clean arm action with extension out front. Fastball was 77-78 mph with late run and sink action for strikes. Small shape with solid break on 11/5 curveball. Shows fade and sink on changeup. 4.82 home to first time. Body load, flat swing plane, uses legs well in swing, occasional pop in bat, flashed hard pull side contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Cade Grevengoed, 3B/RHP, WDM Valley, 2022
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.83 home to first time. Fastball was 83-85 mph with flashes of life through zone. Avg. shape and break on curveball with 11/5 shape. Above avg. feel for changeup; thrown at fastball arm speed with fade and sink in bottom of zone. 4.96 home to first time. Square stance with leg kick trigger, some length to contact, requires additional strength, spray contact off bat, gap to gap approach, 74 mph exit velocity. Shows solid footwork and glove, fields out front, avg. tempo and quickness to field, accurate to bag on throws, 71 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; lean build with longer levers, slow tempo to plate, lands with front foot open, slight extension to plate. 66-70 mph fastball with straight action to plate. Jackson Hull, C/RHP, Wilton, 2022
5-foot-11, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 5.14 home to first time. Square stance, inconsistent load, solid present strength, rotational lower half, spray contact off bat with occasional pop, 86 mph exit velocity. 72 mph arm across infield. Avg. receiver, needs improvement with staying quiet behind plate with actions, side saddle setup to throw, strides open to second, short release on throws, avg. accuracy to base, 69 mph arm with 2.15-2.25 pop times. 6-foot-1, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Thin athletic frame on mound, hangs over rubber with front foot outside body, slingy arm action, low ¾ slot, ball jumps on hitter with sneaky quickness. Fastball was 82-84 mph with above avg. run and sink. Quality slider with 10/4 shape and late break for strikes. Slight run on changeup with late fading action in bottom of zone. 4.91 home to first time. Slight leg kick trigger, high back elbow, stiffness to swing, flashes hard line drive contact when extended, 75 mph exit velocity. Long and athletic in field, works through ball, occasional elevated release, covers ground well, 82 mph arm strength from outfield. 79 mph arm across infield.

Camden Kaufman, RHP/3B, Waukee, 2022
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; builds tempo into athletic balance point, clean compact arm action, ball comes out clean in front. Fastball was 78-80 mph with varying action to plate. Shows above avg. breaking ball with 11/5 shape for strikes. Cut action on changeup thrown near fastball arm speed. 5.01 home to first time. Square stance, short to contact, inverted path, looks to elevate, stiffer legs, spray contact off bat, 74 mph exit velocity. Brady Kauzlarich, OF/LHP, Centerville, 2021
5-foot-10, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.40 home to first time. Square stance with easy rhythm, line drive approach, occasionally out front at contact, shows ability to drive ball to pull gap, 90 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field with easy actions, works through ball, covers ground well, online throws with accuracy to target, 81 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; one of top arms at event, athletic on mound, clean arm action with easy effort. Fastball was 82-84 mph with above avg. life through zone. Small late break on cutter type breaking ball. Solid action on knuckleball for strikes.

John Klosterman, RHP/3B, Iowa City High, 2022
5-foot-10, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; Balanced delivery with short compact arm action; lands across body creating slight cross-fire to plate. Fastball was 77-80 mph with varying action to plate. Solid spin and break on 11/5 curveball. Throws changeup with above avg. arm speed creating late fade and sink. 4.60 home to first time. Square stance, easy body load, has strength in hands, pushes/punches through contact, has ability to drive baseball, occasional pop in bat, 87 mph exit velocity. Works low to ground with softer hands and solid overall actions, clean compact arm action, shows accuracy and carry to bag, 83 mph arm across infield.

Carson Knebel, RHP/OF, Pleasant Valley, 2022
6-foot-3, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Long lanky frame. Short arm path on back side, cuts across and through on release, some extension to plate. Fastball was 78-80 mph with varying action to plate. Tends to hook breaking ball across body creating avg. depth and break. 4.78 home to first time. Leg kick trigger, choppy actions in box, falls back at contact, spray contact off bat, uses whole field, 78 mph exit velocity. Plays fast, can be out of control at times, works through ball, quick release, avg. carry with accuracy to target, 82 mph arm strength from outfield.

Bronx Lewis, LHP/OF, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2021
6-foot, 150-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; thin athletic frame, swings into higher balance point, high ¾ slot, occasional stiffness in legs and hips which should improve with strength and development. Fastball was 74-77 mph with flashes of run and sink. Small shape with short break on 1/7 curveball. Changeup shows flashes of above avg. fade and sink in bottom of zone. 4.57 home to first. Square stance, leg kick trigger, spin tendencies with lower half, line drive swing, occasional bat speed, flashes hard mid/pull side contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Ethan Luzum, RHP, South Winneshiek, 2021
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Builds tempo in delivery, crouched tuck and turn balance point, compact arm action, consistent strike thrower. Fastball was 77-79 mph with late ASR for strikes. 10/4 shape with avg. spin on slider. Slight fading action on changeup thrown near fastball arm speed.

Tyler Maro, RHP/1B, Davenport Assumption, 2021
6-foot-7, 230-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; medium tuck and turn, hides ball behind body, compact arm action, some stiffness in delivery. Fastball was 80-81 mph with slight cutting action to plate. Loose spin and small break on 12/6 curveball. Changeup has cutter shape with small late break for strikes. 4.88 home to first time. Square stance, lower hand set, short to contact for large frame, above avg. strength, stiff swing with occasional pop in bat, 92 mph exit velocity. Avg. footwork, tends to squat to field, accurate arm, large target around bag, 81 mph arm strength across infield.

6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; tall lean frame, short path on back side, low ¾ arm slot. Fastball was 73-76 mph with flashes of late run and sink. Breaking ball tends to back up on hitter; 10/4 shape with loose spin. Solid action and feel for changeup. 4.89 home to first time. Zach Neese, RHP/OF, Cedar Falls, 2021
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; controlled tempo into higher square balance point, long arm action, effort and rushes after hand break. Fastball was 78-80 mph with varying action to plate. Avg. breaking ball with 11/5 shape. Solid down action on changeup thrown from OT slot. 4.56 home to first time. Square stance, wide base, lower hand set, flat swing plane, pull approach, slashy contact off bat, 82 mph exit velocity. Ben Orr, 3B/RHP, Durant, 2022
5-foot-10, 195-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.68 home to first time. Open stance, leg kick trigger to square, has strength in hands/barrel, harder line drive contact, some stiffness to swing with short finish, should improve with greater extension through contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Oliver Parizek, RHP/2B, WDM Valley, 2021
5-foot-10, 153-pund right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; controlled tempo into high athletic tuck and turn balance point, lands across body, short arm action and is clean out front. Fastball was 78-81 mph with slight run and sink action. Higher spin on breaking ball with smaller 12/6 shape. Solid fade with down action on changeup for strikes. 4.75 home to first time. Narrow open stance, looks to elevate, falls back through contact, shows occasional pop in bat to pull side, 83 mph exit velocity. Works low to ground, sure hands, solid athleticism, accurate arm, some quick twitch actions in field, 73 mph arm strength across infield.

Bryce Phelps, SS/RHP, Denver, 2021
6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.63 home to first time. Projectable frame in box, body load, loses connection creating arm bar, has quality extension through contact, occasional pop in bat, spray contact and uses both sides of field, 86 mph exit velocity.
