Catching Analysis: Class of 2019-South

Today, the Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff takes a deeper look at catching performances from the June event.

Ryan Atkinson C / OF / Leake Academy, MS / 2019Currently ranked No. 162 in Mississippi’s 2019 class. Wiry 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame. Right-handed hitter starts with an athletic base, loose rhythm in hands, smooth load back and has a short toe tap stride. Works behind the ball with his barrel to create bat speed and a flat path through the zone producing an exit velocity of 78 mph. Defensively pop times ranged from 2.12-2.22, making low throws around the bag at 68 mph, with a clean exchange. In the outfield he has fluid footwork, especially for a primary catcher, clean transfers and arm accuracy that produced a positional velocity 76 mph. Ran a 7.38 60-yard dash. |

John Cartwright C / 1B / Madison Ridgeland Academy , MS / 2019Currently ranked No. 62 in the 2019 class. A physically developed 6-foot-2, 240-pound frame with strong build. The left-handed hitter had one of the better rounds of batting practice on the day blasting balls from gap-to-gap. Hitting from a tall and athletic setup with smooth, simple load and direct path, Cartwright was able to produce line-drive contact with strength to the pull side posting a 95 mph exit velocity. Defensively he showed solid catch and throw skills with stiffness in setup, posting pop times ranging 1.93-1.99 seconds and a positional velocity of 74 mph. Ran a 7.9 60-yard dash. |

Bailey White C / Madison-Ridgeland Academy, MS / 2019Currently ranked No. 147 in Mississippi’s 2019 class. Wiry 6-foot-1, 155-pound frame. Right-handed hitter that starts from an athletic base in his stance, has looseness in his hands, takes a small simple load back with his body, pushes his hands past his back foot at shoulder height to create separation, has barrel lag through the zone with loose barrel action in his swing. Easy swing effort and has a flat finish through contact that produced an exit velocity 85 mph. Defensively made accurate throws around the bag to second base at 70 mph, and his pop times ranged from 1.98-2.12 seconds. Creates good direction in his footwork with slow, clean exchanges while throwing, and has soft body actions while blocking. Ran a 7.19 60-yard dash. |
