Golden Spikes Scout Day: Quick Hits

Matt Miller
State Director

Meridian, MS - The Golden Spikes Scout Day was held on Sunday, May 21st at Meridian CC in Meridian, MS. This event was an open event that consisted of some of the top prospects from the 2024-2027 classes within the Golden Spikes Organization. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman, ran the 60 yard dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens during the workout and were able to get numbers and metrics. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Sunday.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Sunday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event along with other pieces of content.

QUICK HITS

+ 3B/RHP William Etheridge (Patrician Academy, AL, 2024) showed his two way ability on Sunday at our Golden Spikes Baseball Club Scout Day. The 6-2 solid framed uncommitted righty worked off the mound with a three quarter slot and good arm side action to his fastball that reached 87 mph, which was the event high. Etheridge also has solid feel for spin and stayed in the strike zone with all three pitches. The 3B had fluid movements and soft hands on defense and looks sure handed at the hot corner position. At the plate the rising senior worked the middle of the field well using a level bat path and line drive approach with exit velocities reaching 95 mph and an average of 89 mph.

+ OF Chase Billiot (South Jones, 2024) displayed some head turning tools on Sunday Meridian CC. The 6-3 framed uncommitted rising senior first caught our attention with a 6.68 laser 60; a very solid time for his size. Billion then recorded an 88 outfield velocity with very good accuracy on all throws. Using leverage at the plate and a fairly level bat path and a middle of the field approach, Billiot found the barrel multiple times with exit velocities up to 97 mph.

+ INF/RHP Walker Hall (Wayne Academy, 2024) was another two way prospect from this past weekend. Using his 5-10 athletic frame the uncommitted right handed hitting infielder stays inside the baseball well at the plate using a line drive and middle to opposite field approach. Hall was very consistent with the finding the barrel and produced several line drives to right. He then hopped on the mound and pounded the strike zone with good feel for 3 pitches including a fastball up to 84 mph.

+ LHP Wes Pritchard (Lamar School, 2024) was a intriguing lefty from this Sunday. Using a 6-3, lanky frame that screams upside, the uncommitted rising senior worked his fastball in the 80-82 mph range. Prichard's arm action was clean and the delivery was in sync so with a focus on strength and explosion this arm could blow up over the next 12 months.

+ RHP John Parker Hancock (Neshoba Central, 2025) had possibly the most upside of any player at the event. Hancock still has lots of body maturity and develop ahead of him though on Sunday the length, looseness, and whip of his arm action would get most pitching coaches very excited. He showed feel for 3 pitches, including a fastball up to 80 mph, a breaking ball with biting action, and a changeup that mimics his FB and has good fading action. One to follow!

+ RHP Luke Williams (Clarkdale, 2025) was yet another young arm that has reached prospect status for the Golden Spikes. The 6-0 lean framed rising junior sat 83-85 mph with his fastball during his bullpen on Sunday with more on the way as the body continues to sturdy up. Williams throws a still developing curveball with good tilt and 12/6 shape, along with a change that is in the works as well and should be a solid go to pitch soon.

+ OF Adyn Westmoreland (Heritage Academy, 2025) continues to build on his resume. We first saw the athletically built rising junior last year as he impressed us with a few low to mid 90's exit velocities during his batting practice round. Westmoreland has become more consistent with the barrel and rattled off several mid 90's swings on Sunday with a high of 97 mph. He also isn't looking for the wall and uses more of a line drive approach with several baseballs finding their way into the opposite field gap. In the outfield Westmoreland has increased his arm velocity 7 mph from last year and shows solid accuracy on throws.
