MS All-State Games: Infield Analysis

Jackson, MS – For the second year the MS All-State Games revealed more depth in both the 2020 and 2021 class, along with several 2019 standouts. Statistics and video have already been uploaded into players profiles. Last week we begin rolling out player reports with the outfielders, whic can be found HERE.

Today we take a deeper look into the infielders that were in attendance.

+ Austin Lee, C/1B, Germantown, 2020
Broad shouldered, high-waisted frame that projects to add even more strength in the next year at 6-foot-5, 215-pounds. The left-handed hitter starts from a tall, stacked setup with relaxed hands, then loads up as he triggers his hands and tips the barrel forward, and taking a short stride. Hands work through the zone with looseness, creating lag in the barrel to go with lift through the zone, to create a top exit velocity of 86 mph. Defensively worked through balls athletically with deliberate footwork. Clean, quick exchanges into a short arm action and high-¾ release that produced a 82 mph positional velocity. Ran a 7.33 60-yard dash.

+ Colton Neal, OF/RHP, Lewisburg, 2022
Maturing 5-foot-9, 165-pound frame, with athletic build. Right-handed hitter has loose rhythm, quick hands with lag in the barrel through the zone that created ground ball/line drive contact and a top exit velocity of 82 mph. On infield worked into athletic fielding position with active feet to the ball.  Clean exchanges into high-3/4 release producing a positional velocity of 81 mph. Ran a 7.44 60-yard dash. 

+ Elijah Watts, 3B/RHP, Resurrection Catholic, 2020
Hulky 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher throwing from high-¾ release with fluid rhythm and loose, quick arm stroke with regular effort in delivery. Right-handed hitter showed an aggressive approach with strength in swing. Starting from an open setup worked closed with a subtle load and short stride. Rotational path with uphill finish that produced an exit velocity 87 mph. Defensive move with smooth footwork and receptive hands, flashing adequate arm strength recording a positional velocity of 81 mph. Ran a 7.77 60-yard dash.

+ Hunter Richardson, 1B/C, Enterprise, 2019
Physically framed 6-foot-3, 245-pound with present strength throughout build. Right-handed hitter starting from an open stance with loose rhythm in setup. Pronounced knee-to-knee load as hands trigger back and down. Flat, path through the zone with bat-speed and present strength at contact posting a 98 mph exit velocity. Defensive moved with deliberate footwork and receptive hands, flashing adequate arm strength recording a positional velocity of 80 mph. Ran a 7.79 60-yard dash.

+ Thomas Milam, SS/2B, Ridgeland, 2019
Athletic 5-foot-9, 175-pound frame. Defensively handled the ball well in the middle of the field playing light on his feet, flashing an accurate arm across the diamond, recording a positional velocity of 79 mph. Offensively has a simple rhythm in load with good lag through the zone showing a ground ball/line drive approach posting an exit velocity of 84 mph. Ran a 7.37 60-yard dash.

+ Landon Bull, 2B/OF, Warren Central, 2019
Medium build 5-foot-8, 185-pound frame. Right-handed hitter has tall setup with easy rhythm and loose hands, allowing him to produce ground ball/line drive contact from gap to gap posting an exit velocity of 81 mph. On infield played through balls with deliberate footwork and receptive hands working into a high-¾ slot, posting a 76 mph positional velocity. Ran a 7.84 60-yard dash. 

+ Wesley Sides, 1B/3B, DeSoto Central, 2020
Sturdy, strong frame at 6-foot-1, 215-pounds. Right-handed hitter showed off fast-strong hands that generate the type of easy bat speed and an exit velocity of 93 mph. The setup is tall and balanced with simple rhythm in hands. Subtle shift of weight back before taking a short stride forward. The path is short and on a slight uphill path through the zone. Defensively bounce around with smooth footwork around the bag and receptive hands. Made clean exchanges working into a short high-3/4 release that posted a positional velocity of 76 mph. Ran a 7.72 60-yard dash. 

+ Matt Jones, OF/RHP, Jim Hill, 2020
6/5/18 Athletic 5-foot-6, 150-pound frame. Right-handed hitter starting from tall setup with a loose relaxed rhythm in hand. Slight step back before loading with hanging leg lift, lands balanced with short stride. Short, direct path with whippy uphill finish through the zone that produced an exit velocity 79 mph. Defender with smooth footwork and receptive hands out front working into clean exchanges and high-3/4 release, recorded an infield positional velocity of 75 mph. Ran a 7.20 60-yard dash.

+ Jackson Roy, 3B/1B, Oxford, 2020
Medium 6-foot, 190-pound frame. Right-handed hitter tall, neutral setup with handed slightly above shoulders and loose rhythm. Simple, shift of weight loading onto back side. Rotational, flat path creating line-drive/ground with bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 85 mph. Defensively got into fielding position early letting ball travel to body. Worked with receptive hands and clean, mid-line exchange into medium arm stroke and 3/4 release that produced a positional velocity of 74 mph. Ran a 8.09 60-yard dash.     

+ Brady Johnson, SS/2B, St. Joseph Catholic, 2019
Athletic 6-foot, 165-pound frame. Right-handed hitter starting from a balanced and relaxed setup. Smooth knee-to-knee load with short stride and direct path that produced an exit velocity 79 mph. Defender with smooth footwork and receptive hands out front working into clean exchanges and short, high-3/4 release, recorded an infield positional velocity of 75 mph. Solid athlete ran a 6.81 60-yard dash.

+ Tristan Tigrett, 3B/2B, Brandon, 2019
Medium 6-foot-1, 192-pound frame. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, slightly open, grounded stance. Simple load closed using a subtle toe tap and balanced throughout. Direct path with strong swing and uphill finish that produced an exit velocity of 82 mph. Defender does a nice job of funneling the ball to the midline of his body as he shuffles his feet to create linear momentum towards target. Works into a long arm swing and high-3/4 release posting a infield velocity of 73 mph. Ran a 7.50 60-yard dash.

+ Drew Pendergrass, 3B/1B, Florence, 2020
Lean, athletic 6-fot-2, 172-pound frame. Right-handed hitter starting from balanced, neutral setup. Works into load with subtle knee-to-knee approach and short stride. Aggressive rotational swing with strength and uphill finish posting an 86 mph exit velocity. Defender that fields ball out front with slow, smooth footwork creating momentum towards first base. Clean transfer into short ¾ release with stiffness, produced a positional velocity of 68 mph. Ran a 7.44 60-yard dash.

+ Joseph Bauer, 1B/3B, Copiah Academy, 2019
Lean, athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 193-pounds. Right-handed hitter starts from a tall and open setup with loose rhythm in hands, working into closed hitting position with an exaggerated leg kick. The swing was direct and quick to contact but flashed some inconsistency in timing and stiffness in finish, produced 89 mph exit velocity. Defender that fields ball out front with slow, smooth footwork creating momentum towards second base. Clean transfer into short ¾ release that produced a positional velocity of 68 mph. Ran a 7.44 60-yard dash.

+ Leif Moore, SS/RHP, St. Martin, 2019
Pearl River CC commit has an athletic 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame with plenty of room to add strength over the next couple of years. Offensively flashed a short approach creating good lag through the zone, to go with a balanced setup. He posted an exit velocity of 90 mph off the tee, and showed gap power during BP, as well a quality at-bat during the game where he found barrel in a couple at-bats. Defensively worked with fluid footwork at shortstop and flashed plenty of arm strength across the diamond at 85 mph. Ran a 7.08 60-yard dash.

+ Mac Sims, RHP/SS, DeSoto Central, 2020
Athletic 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame with room for added strength. Switch hitter starting from an open and tall setup with loose rhythm in hands. Loads with a quick, abbreviated leg kick into a short stride, slightly creating separation with hands. Loose, rotational path with quick hands and bat speed through the zone producing an exit velocity 86 mph. Defensively displayed fundamental footwork, moving with smoothness through the play with a clean exchange, and made low accurate throws from multiple arm slots producing a positional velocity of 85 mph. Ran a 7.52 60-yard dash.

+ Cole Tolbert, 3B/1B, West Jones, 2021
Long-limb 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame with room to continue to fill. Moved well defensively with fluid footwork, clean exchanges while playing through balls athletically. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced an infield positional velocity of 84 mph. Right-handed hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth and short leg lift load with short stride. Back-side worked aggressively in swing with loose uphill path and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 88 mph. Also posted a 7.30 60-yard dash.

+ Robert Riggin, SS/2B, Raymond, 2020
Athletic 6-foot-1, 188-pound frame with room to continue to fill. Defensively displayed solid footwork on the infield as his hands worked out front, playing low through the baseball. Arm works well from a high slot as he threw 84 mph across the diamond with good carry. Switch hitter starting from tall stacked setup with loose rhythm in hands. Knee-to-knee type load with some length in stride before getting out on front side. Direct, flat path to the ball that produced an exit velocity of 89 mph. Ran a 7.26 60-yard dash.
