Prep Baseball Report Mississippi held the Mississippi Open on July 11 on the campus of Southwest Community College in Summit, MS.  The open event saw players from all across the state of Mississippi in attendance.

Today, we will break down the event position-by-postion, taking a look at pitchers and catchers.  Although some participated in other positions, this is just a break down of their performance as a pitcher or catcher.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

+ Sam Brooks, RHP, Madison-Ridgeland Academy, 2018
Skinny 6-foot-1, 150-pound frame, with room for added strength. Right-handed pitcher that throws from ¾ release, with long loose arm action and easy effort. Starts with closed front side, solid balance, while tall on the backside. Slow smooth, fluid rhythm with even shoulder, in-line direction, landing falling off to the first base side. Fastball sat 77-80 mph with arm side run and sinking action. Slider showed 10/5-shape, occasional tight spin with near fastball arm speed at 69-72 mph. Change up showed arm side fading action with near fastball arm speed at 73-74 mph.

+ Landon Cochran, RHP, Madison-Ridgeland Academy, 2018
Long, skinny 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher throwing from high-3/4 release with short arm action and regular effort. Smooth rhythm, with level shoulders, in-line direction, working around front side. Fastball sat 76-79 mph, slight arm side action and throw for a strike. Breaking ball showed 11/5-shape with developing spin, near fastball arm speed, and solid depth at 66-68 mph. Change up showed slight arm side action with near fastball arm speed at 67-68 mph.

+ Braydon Coffey, C, Parklane Academy, 2019
Thick 5-foot-8, 190-pound frame. Catcher with soft hands receiving, strong wrist, some stiffness in setup, and quick clean transfer. Short arm action, in-line direction on throws to second recording a pop time range of 2.03-2.15 and a positional velocity of 73 mph. Right-handed hitter hitting from tall, open, athletic setup with high hands.  Stiff load, with short stride landing even and behind front side. Left-center field approach, short, slight uphill path and solid bat speed producing an exit velocity of 86 mph. Ran a 7.19 60-yard dash.

+ Devin Daniels, 2B, East Marion, 2020
Right-handed pitcher that throws from a over-top arm slot, with short, stiff arm action and regular effort in delivery. Smooth, fluid rhythm with slight up-hill shoulders, in-line direction landing square and finishing slightly off to first base side. Fastball sat 70-73 mph. Breaking ball showed 11/5-shape with developing spin and gradual action at 63-69 mph.

+ Patrick Gill, C, Columbia Academy, 2020
Athletic 5-foot-9, 155-pound frame, with room for added strength. Right-handed hitter hitting from tall, athletic setup with high hands.  Works backwards in load, subtle leg lift, short stride, slight arm bar. Left-center field approach, slight up-hill path with developing bat speed producing an exit velocity of 77 mph. Catcher with soft hands and flexibility in setup with slow, clean transfer. Short arm action, in-line direction on throws to second recording a pop time range of 2.19-2.33 and a positional velocity of 74 mph. Ran a 7.79 60-yard dash.

+ Cade Killingsworth, RHP, North Pike, 2018
Right-handed pitcher with long loose arm action and regular effort in delivery. Smooth, fluid rhythm with even shoulders, in-line direction landing square and finishing athletically. Fastball sat 82-85 mph with sinking action and for strike. Breaking ball showed 11/5-shape with early action and near fastball arm speed at 70-72 mph. Change up showed slight arm side action with near fastball arm speed at 73-74 mph.

+ Preston Ray, LHP, Madison-Ridgeland Academy, 2018
Long, skinny 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame. Left-handed pitcher throwing from high-3/4 release with short, quick arm action and easy effort in delivery. Quick, smooth rhythm, slight up-hill shoulders, in-line direction, landing square and athletically. Fastball was commanded at 72-75 mph, touching 76 mph. Breaking ball showed 2/8-shape with early action and developing spin at 59-60 mph. Change up showed slight arm side action with near fastball arm speed at 66-67 mph.

+ Spencer Smith, RHP, Central Hinds Academy, 2018
Skinny 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher with long loose arm action and regular effort in delivery. Smooth, fluid rhythm with level shoulders, in-line direction landing square and finishing slightly off to first base side. Fastball sat 75-80 mph with arm side miss. Breaking ball showed 11/5-shape with early action and near fastball arm speed at 63-65 mph. Split showed slight fading action with near fastball arm speed at 70-71 mph.

+ AJ Stinson, RHP, Hattiesburg, 2018
Physical 6-foot, 190-pound frame.  Right-handed pitcher with clean, easy arm action, high-3/4 release with little effort. Smooth rhythm, slight uphill shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and athletic. Fastball sat 84-86 mph, touching 87 mph, slight downhill tilt and for strike. Flashed changeup with fastball near fastball arm speed at 76-77 mph. Breaking ball showed 11/5-shape with early action and occasional tight spin at 69-73 mph.

+ Cade Suber, RHP, Laurel Christian, 2019
Long, skinny 6-foot-2, 177-pound frame, with room for added strength. Right-handed pitcher with long loose arm action and regular effort in delivery. Smooth, fluid rhythm with even shoulders, in-line direction landing square and finishing athletically. Fastball sat 76-77 mph with arm side run and for strike. Breaking ball showed 11/5-shape with early, gradual action and near fastball arm speed at 59-61 mph. Change up showed slight arm side action at 65-66 mph.

+ Xavier Wansley, RHP, Terry, 2019
Thick 5-foot-11, 195-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher with high-3/4 release and little effort. Smooth, slow rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and athletic. Fastball sat 70-73 mph, and throw for strike. Slider showed 10/5 shape with gradual action at 63-69 mph.

+ Nathan Weatherly, C, Pass Christian, 2018
Thick 6-foot, 210-pound frame. Right-handed hitter hits from tall, athletic setup, working backwards in load. Mechanically simple, fluid rhythm with, level swing path, with pull approach, with stiffness; produced exit velocity of 80 mph. Catcher with soft hands receiving, stiffness in setup, and long, clean transfer. Short arm action, in-line direction on throws to second recording a pop time range of 2.11-2.19 and a positional velocity of 76 mph.

+ Conner Wilson, RHP, Parklane Academy, 2021
Right-handed pitcher with high-3/4 release and little effort. Smooth, slow rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and athletically, falling off to first base side. Fastball sat 75-78 mph, and thrown for strike. Slider showed 10/5 shape with gradual action at 60-61 mph. Ran 7.51 60-yard dash. Change up showed slight arm side action at 62-63 mph.
