Outfield Analysis: Class of 2019 - South

The Class of 2019 South event took place on Tuesday, June 5th, at Southwest Community College, in Summit, MS. The open event saw prospects from across the state of Mississippi perform in front of several college coaches, and the Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff.

Today, the Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff takes a deeper look at the pitching performances from the June event.

+ Rusty Atkinson, LHP, Leake Academy, 2019
Lean, athletic 6-foot, 170-pound frame. Left-handed hitter with athletic and open stance. Simple, quite load working closed  with a short stride. Hips work around a rotational axis at the plate, with barrel working uphill and to the pull-side of the field; produced an exit velocity 78 mph. Defensively worked through the balls well in outfield creating direction to the plate in his footwork with clean exchanges; produced a 79 mph positional velocity. Ran a 7.5 60-yard dash.

+ Ryan Atkinson, LHP, Leake Academy, 2019
Currently ranked No. 148 in Mississippi’s 2019 class. Wiry 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame. Right-handed hitter starts with an athletic base, loose rhythm in hands, smooth load back and has a short toe tap stride. Works behind the ball with his barrel to create bat speed and a flat path through the zone producing an exit velocity of 78 mph. Defensively pop times ranged from 2.12-2.22, making low throws around the bag at 68 mph, with a clean exchange. In the outfield he has fluid footwork, especially for a primary catcher, clean transfers and arm accuracy that produced a positional velocity 76 mph. Ran a 7.38 60-yard dash.

+ Dawson Lawler, RHP, Purvis, 2019
Long-limb 6-foot, 150-pound frame with room for added strength. Right-handed hitter takes aggressive hacks out of an athletic, open setup. Pronounced shift of weight loading while creating separation in hands and taking a short stride. Showed line drive power in batting practice with lengthy, flat path posting a 79 mph exit velocity. From the outfield, he has a smooth approach and transfer and made accurate throws to the plate, posting a 78 mph positional velocity.

+ Cole Pittman, RHP, Porter's Chapel Academy, 2019
Currently ranked No. 148 in Mississippi’s 2019 class. Wiry 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame with room for added strength. Right-handed hitter starting from tall, open setup with hands slightly above shoulders. Works closed with toe tap load as hands separate working down creating front arm bar with medium stride. Loose, rotational path producing  an exit velocity 80 mph. Defensively played through the ball with rhythm, receptive hands, and throws from a medium arm swing producing a positional velocity of 83 mph. Ran a 7.7 60-yard dash.

+ Landon Rawson, RHP, Central Holmes Christan, 2019
Athletic, wiry 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame with room to add strength. Right-handed hitter starting from tall, relaxed setup with simple rhythm. Loads with a short, leg kick landing balanced. Short, loose stroke with a flat path through the zone that produced an exit velocity 81 mph. Defensively in the outfield showed fluid actions with a clean exchange, and made accurate and carry on throws at 86 mph through the cut-off man.  Ran a 7.5 60-yard dash.
